BLW - any tips for dealing with over-enthusiastic baby?

DS seems to be taking to this solid food thing a bit too well! For example when presented with brocolli he hasn't caught on to the stalk handle bit at all. He shoves the whole thing in his mouth til he gags and then uses his fist to continue shoving at the same time as retching and coughing. He is incredibly efficient - eventually a few well chewed bits of stalk emerge and not much else. However I'm worried he's going to really choke before he gets the idea that gagging is meant to clear a blockage (if you get your fist out the way).

So far this seems to be the way he deals with all food - I didn't realise it was possible for an entire baby rice cake to go in at once but DS has proved it is! I've tried varying the size of the bits of food but that doesn't seem to help. Any ideas how I can persuade him to savour a bit more instead of scoffing?

DS did this - he's 14 months now and still hasn't got the idea that you put one piece in at a time! I just chop stuff up small for him and let him pick it up that way.

I have a theory that this is a boy's method of BLW! Stuff it in and hope for the best! DS has got a bit more 'considered' in how he eats but it's still pretty hilarious compared to his friend who is a girl and eats so daintily! If your DS hasn't choked yet it sounds like he's managing the big bits in his mouth just fine- just make sure you watch him if he's put a lot in, and know what to do if he does choke (nhs direct has info).

It's good to hear others have survived with a similar technique! I fluctuate wildly from being really chuffed that he's doing so well actually eating stuff to being scared he's going to do himself an injury

this was dd about 8 months ago!

echo tinkjon, cut up small and watch like a hawk!

DS does exactly the same - must be a boy thing. He shoves whole babybels and cherry tomatoes into his mouth aswell. Just make sure you chop the bits up quite small so they won't block his airways.

I'd leave him to it - he's more likely to choke on small bits that can be shoved in and swallowed, than a big bit of broccoli that has to be chewed.

DS has always been a v enthusiastic shove and chewer and has never choked

dd (16m) also shoves and chews

I find 1" squares are perfect (ie slice of bread goes into 16)

DS is still a bit rubbish at picking up small bits so we'll have to stick to fairly large pieces for now. I have done a baby first aid course, just nervous at the idea of ever having to put it into practise.

Thought I'd give him a spoon today to see what he did and he tried ramming that down his throat as well as flicking yogurt amazing distances.
