fluid intake/not drinking

DS is almost 10months, he has one BF in the morning and one at bedtimes but we really struggle to get any liquid in him between BF's (which, on the days i work can be 13 hours apart).
He doesn't want water or formula but his poos are rock hard & hurting him (sorry!).
SIL has suggested very diluted fruit juice but i don't want to do this, i'm more inclined to try cows milk - any other suggestions?

Will he drink EBM?? My DD would never drink water either and I didnt want her to have juice. I gave in and gave her really well diluted babyjuice and once she was used to drinking put less and less in until she was back to water. She only has water now. Does he struggle with the cup youre using??

blondiep14 · 02/12/2008 15:06

i dont think it's the cup, and i have a wide selection now!
he wasn't overly keen on EBM when i was expressing either. he seems to just not be thirsty, but obviously he needs more than what he is having. SIL tried him with cows milk earlier and he took some so maybe that is the way forward.
What baby juice did you use?

Im not sure which one. It was the brand from the bounty weaning pack if that helps? Theyre REALLY sweet though (even though theyre ready to drink!) so you only need to use as much as if you were making squash for yourself. TBF I dont think that DD would drink much until she was about 10 months.

Don't forget babies get some fluid from the food they eat - yogurts, fruit, milk in baby cereal etc so he is probably getting more than you think. Try upping his fruit intake. If all else fails how about a splash of real orange or apple juice in water, it might get him started drinking fluids.

blondiep14 · 02/12/2008 16:07

hmm, didn't get any Bounty packs but i may investigate the co-op's offerings if the cows milk isn't a goer!
Thanks Seeline, will up the fruit, that will be good for his tum aswell, guess real fruit juice probably less sugary than baby squash so that also worth a go.
I suppose all babaies start drinking less milk at some stage..!

Have you tried giving it to him straight from the cup with no spout, sippy thing. Ds2 (9months) was like this and only drank if i gave it him so he could slurp it straight out of the beaker. He's got the hang of sippy cups now but it took a while. He still prefers to slurp it up but it's blooming messy

blondiep14 · 02/12/2008 16:21

yes, i have tried that before but not recently, perhaps i'll give that another go!

Seconding Seeline, if you really feel you need to give juice to get him to drink then simply give well diluted (at least 10 to 1) ordinary pure fruit juices. There's no need to pay grossly inflated prices for baby juices!
