as in houmous?

are seeds like nuts in that they may be highly allergenic and cause anaphalctic shock stuff.

i think only if you have a history of allergies should you be careful, most babies I know love houmous. (DS had it from 6 months)

Sesame seeds are a very common allergen, i believe (though I am personally happy to give it to my LOs because there's not a history of allergies in our family).

I've been making my 10 month old home made hummus with tahini since she was 6 months, it's fine as long as no history of nut allergies.

knittingmum · 02/12/2008 15:20

what about peanut butter - when can they have that?

HaventAClue · 02/12/2008 15:22

Smooth peanut butter should be fine from 6 months, again as long as no history of nut allergies. Obviously crunchy could be a choking hazard.

oooh, i've been giving dd tahini mixed into her plain yogurt from 6 months

sesame seeds are a fast growing allergy, and seeds do have a link to nuts.
In the fact that some unlucky people have both peanut/tree nut and sesame allergies.
( sesame is a rather static type of seed, falling of all those loaves of bread in the supermarket and getting stuck in your shoes...............can be a complete pain that way)

however, would only avoid if no signs of atopic disease, and none in family.

I am sure that in five years time this advice will change, as there is currently no prove that avoidance is reducing allergies,
and since that advice has been followed the rate of allergies has risen dramatically.
Currently no firm proof of avoidance or giving a food is proved in a study to cause or prevent food allergy occuring. ( sorry poor sentance here -kids fighting)

if your infant is not itchy , scratchy or wheezy and is bonny, healthy and fit, just relax and go with your instincts.

I have one allergic child and three without allergies. For youngest child born after allergic one,we avoided nuts/sesame until three.
She has v mild ezcema and incidents of hives with certain shampoos and creams etc.
No other signs of a overly allergic person.
at 10yrs no food allergies at all.
