What a difference between my babies ... weaning twins - any advice pls

I started weaning my DTs on Saturday last. DT1 looooves her food - even scoffed an entire mashed banana yesterday - and gets cross if I don't feed her quickly enough. She is by far the bigger of the babies and always has been.

DT2 is a much finer wee lassie and is proving a nightmare. (They will be 27w tomorrow BTW). She gags on every spoonful and pushes it back out. I'm not sure if that's down to her not being ready for solids, her tongue-tie or simply the fact that she hasn't been well the last few days (bright enough but we're treating her for very early stage croup so she's very rattly in the upper chest). I'm not pushing too hard because she's not well and I'm not actually too worried at the moment that she's not really getting/taking any solids; I'm just curious as to whether it's tongue-tie or whether she simply mightn't be ready. She will pick food up in her hands and suck on it (ie. toast fingers etc) but isn't really swallowing. Developmentally she's behind DT1 - neither are sitting unaided yet but she doesn't hold herself as steady (tends to flop forward) although she's much more active and rolls around a lot more.

So could some wise Mumsnetters please put my mind at ease - my older boys both weaned at 26w without a backward glance so it's a bit of a shock to the system to have a gagger on my hands . Advice much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi millie! My twins are 29 weeks and DT2 was also a bit of a slow mover. DT1 was scoffing very quickly. My advice is just keep offering food. Try baby rice mixed with ebm or follow-in milk, it is very easy to take off the spoon and tastes like milk so she should like the taste. DT2 pushed food back out as well at first but soon got used to it. It could be the tongue-tie tho, I have no experience of that. I am sure it will get easier. good luck! (How good are twins???)

my twins were v different with food to start with - the bigger one (DT2) took to food with great gusto and the smaller one (DT1) took about 2 weeks or so to really start eating much - lots of pushing food out with tongue as you describe.

Now they are older, DT1 definitely eats as much, if not more and in fact is keener than his brother on finger foods and lumpy food! It will even out in the end even though it can take a while!

PS I remember reading on here not to be scared of gagging as it's a perfectly natural reflex (although it looks dramatic and is unpleasant to watch). That reassured me as I was always so worried about choking...

Thanks ladies! DT2 had baby rice and ebm today for lunch - not much more than a couple of weaning spoons of it but didn't gag or look horrified at the taste/texture. Yes, more finds its way back out than into her tummy .

Hi Neenz ... yours are doing great! Have been reading your puree'ing thread. These two are on purees for speed and ease too ... DS1 did purees and is/was a really fussy eater. DS2 ate what we ate mashed wth fork and is a fairly good eater now. Fingers crossed these ladies will turn out ok! Have a couple of batches in the freezer and must do some more. Gotta run
