Help me overcome my fear of dd choking

DD3 was born at home, and 2 hours after the midwives had left she had a very scary episode of choking on muccus. Fortunately dh remembered his first aid, laid her along his forearm and cleared it - but it was a very long 60 seconds of her not breathing.

This has left me with a major fear of her choking again. I weaned my older two children (now 9 and 7) in the days before BLW, but they soon learnt to manage finger foods and feed themselves. DD3 is 6 months and very keen to feed herself, but she also has two teeth; today she managed to bite lumps off a banana and a pear and gagged on both. The look on her face was so reminiscent of the choking episode that I'm not sure I can face it again.

I know that she has to learn to deal with lumps, and that gagging is not the same as choking - but when I see the gagging coming I panic. Advice/reassurance please!

how frightening for you and well done to your dh,
i would recommend a first aid for children course so you are refreshed as to what to do should something happen (useful for other acidents as well)

it is worth remembering also it is harder to choke when sittin properly so the likelhood is far less with an older baby in a highchair then a newborn

Thanks. You're right - I could do with the reassurance of a first aid course. Will ask HV.

I did the St Johns Ambulance Baby & Child First Aid course when my DS was small. It really helped me calm down a bit about choking hazards. I highly recommend it.
