Small vent about sad weaning behaviour

I have a dd, 11mo, and I know being a new parent is difficult, and I try not to judge, etc. Plus, I realise advice changes over time - for example my mother was ff, but bf us, but also started to wean us at 3mo because that is what she was told was best...

BUT I just saw a young mum and dad buy a pack of QUAVERS for their baby, who must of been about.. oh... 9mo. I thought maybe the baby is just holding the pack, but no, watched mum&dad open it and start feeding the poor thing. I honestly wanted to throttle them - and cry. How can the baby even eat them? My dd would choke.

Okay, needed to vent !

god no Huron, they really ARE crap
you are encountering the MN "let's not judge other parents at any cost" philosophy

taliac · 21/11/2008 17:29

Don't be like me though.

I banned crisps from DD1's diet when she was tiny cos I think they are rubbish.

Now she is obsessed with them!

nickytwotimes · 21/11/2008 17:30

Huron, don't worry!

It is the standard "Don't judge" thread as F&Z said.

Personally, I didn't let ds eat a single salted or flavoured crisp until he was 18 mths.
He's 2 now and I give him any old crap.
I am far more relaxed aobut what I see kids eat though. I used to be appalled until ds got to the bribable stage...

nickytwotimes · 21/11/2008 17:31

...but wanting to throttle/cry was over the top.

agree with marla

i would judge :

weaning at 12 weeks

not using car seats

smoking next to baby / young children esp in a car

there are lots of things that i would get judgey about, but quavers for a 9 month old would not make me want to throttle anyone or cry

I think you are right, my response was a bit of an overreaction. Maybe caused by a combination of lack of sleep, culture shock and misunderstanding of what the baby was being fed?

It's hard too, because we got here when baby was 6mo and so much of what we were told was different. Very confusing.

BTW I think Canadians ARE more judgy than brits! I'm going to learn more self-control
for MN, or find a Canadian site to post to ;) (which don't seem to exist or be as good).

So you think a packet of Quavers is comparable to a beer?

You are so funny.

to be honest, I would be worried if I see a 9mo being fed Quavers... it has no nutritional value for little ones and it's worse than giving them something with sugar (which is very banned in the UK). However, if it was a one off, I might agree.

onepieceoflollipop · 21/11/2008 20:48

dd1 had a very healthy restricted diet.

dd2 on the other hand can spot a crisp packet/Cadbury wrapper from the next room and has been able to do so from the age of around 10 months. She crawls towards the person eating anything "nice" holds her hands up, (imagine begging position like a puppy) and kind of whimpers until we say "no" (when she cries) or give her a sample. If we give her some she harasses us unmercifully for more.

pinkspottywellies · 21/11/2008 20:49

A mum shoving dolly mixtures in a 7 month old's mouth when I worked in a sweet shop made me a bit but even that didn't make me want to commit gbh upon her

Unsalted crisps (the old Smiths ones or my waitrose do one, you know, the ones with the little blus pack to add your own) are an excellent means of getting some fat and carbs into a limited eater. It's our fallback if ds1 aged 2.9 is completely refusing. Again.
