Liquids other than milk?

OK so my baby only drinks milk. She's been eating purees for a couple of weeks now and I'm beginning to think about giving her something else to drink. I tried to give her cooled boiled water months ago and she was having none of it. What drinks do you give your early weaners and what do they use to drink it? Do they have drinks with every meal?

i just offered water with meals in a nuby cup and she sipped it but drank very little, she was 5 months.

I offered a lidded cup of water (tommee tippee first cup with flip up lid and handles) with meals but often only a few sips were taken. That is fine as long as they are still taking plenty of milk. I only gave water till ds was 10/11 months old and then introduced diluted fruit juices as an alternative.

My DD is nearly 9 months, BF and doesnt have large amounts of solids. I usually offer her some water from a Tommy Tippee first cup if she has a reasonable amount of solids. Sometimes she has a few glugs and other times she's not interested.

VeryHungryKatypillar · 15/11/2008 21:15

Have tried getting DD to take water in all sorts of cups with not much success thus far. I've also tried very watered down juice, and this gets spat out just the same as the water.

I think they just need some time to get used to drinking something that is not milk. After three or so weeks of trying, we are finally getting some success with the Tommee Tippee first cup.

BTW, am v keen to get more water into her as we've had a bad bout of constipation recently and I don't want a repeat (we are also doing the puree thing which probably doesn't help, but full on BLW not for us).

Becky77 · 15/11/2008 21:55

Do purees increase the chances of constipation then?

We do have the Tommee Tippee first cup and she grabbed it and shoved it in her mouth straight away but she hasn't really mastered controlling the flow yet. I should get her to practise on it again though.

I give the juice that I have stewed apples in, diluted with water. Thay way none of the nutrients are lost. You can do the same with carrot water too. If LO is constipated try fresh apple juice (if old enough).

littleboyblue · 15/11/2008 22:47

My ds didn't drink much water so I figured he just wasn't thirsty. He got so constipated that the doctor gave us those things to put up his bum (don't know how to spell the word but you know what I mean). I tried loads of different cups and in the end gave squash.

MrsJamin · 15/11/2008 23:18

I have heard that (counter-intuitively) purees do increase the chances of constipation, I can't remember why though.

nappyaddict · 16/11/2008 00:03

DS has had chamomile tea, water, freshly squeezed juice and smoothies.

Mine · 16/11/2008 08:44

my DS, now 12 months, always hated water... after trying lots of different drinks i found he preferred green tea.

He still drinks it out of a bottle though... he's too lazy to hold his sippy cup!!!

VeryHungryKatypillar · 16/11/2008 16:43

I have read that purees can increase the chances of constipation (versus BLW) as their intake of solids is greater, quicker and it takes a while for their systems to adjust. So I think its more important to get water into them somehow when weaning on purees.

pudding25 · 16/11/2008 20:04

DD spits the water back out or lets it dribble down her chin. She was making some great noises while doing so

She has been doing about 3 poos/day since she has been on purees - lovely aroma

Becky77 · 16/11/2008 21:54

Do you always mix your DD's puree with baby rice pudding25? I'm still trying to figure out if baby rice makes her poo more or less... but she's eating so much I'm mixing it in with every meal!

Oh yes and the aroma is quite something... I miss those milky poo days!

She always has the baby rice mixed with the puree -apart from this morning when she had her first breakfast of natural yoghurt and fruit.

Becky77 · 17/11/2008 10:22

Did she love it? I'm looking forward to giving ours yoghurt!
