Doidy Cups

After all the recommendations on here, I bought dd (6mths) one (lovely purple colour ).

Bit confused - I put some water in it. She was very keen to grab hold of the handles but I thought that would probably notbe the best of ideas as she would tip it all over herself. I raised it to her mouth and tipped a bit in (th elook of surprise on her face was a picture). It all came straight back out!

Is it just a case of practising? Also, when do you actually let them hold the handls themselves (18yrs old? )

Had to google doidy cup I remember using one with my son, but not until he was older (2ish) my daughted (18months) would still empty it all over herself/ carpet/ innocent by-standers now. Not sure I'm helping much- sorry

pudding25 · 13/11/2008 22:30

Thanks Lurcio. I wonder if anyone has any other advice or whether I should start with the non spill beaker I bought. Would be a shame. The doidy cup is so pretty -maybe I will use it

DS has been using one since about 5 months.

whomovedmychocolate · 13/11/2008 22:34

I gave DD one but it took till 18 months till she had the coordination not to regularly dump the contents in her lap.

gigglewitch · 13/11/2008 22:34

my dc were great with the doidy cups. well, after a few days of wet t-shirts like you say. Keep doing as you are already, half-fill with water, they think it's great fun and soon get the idea.
All drinking tea out of normal human-being style mugs by their 2nd birthday

giddykipper · 13/11/2008 22:37

Stick with it - DS is now 18 months and has all of his drinks out of normal cups. Nursery think it's incredible, all the other toddlers try to copy him with rather messy consequences!

giddykipper · 13/11/2008 22:38

And to answer your question, I held the cup for him until he demanded to hold it for himself.

BexieID · 13/11/2008 22:39

Tom used to use one as he wouldn't use a normal lidded one with a spout. Now he drinks fine with the lidded cup and spout. I'l like to try him with a Amadeus 360 cup with the handles but can't find one!

nappyaddict · 13/11/2008 22:54

boots and mothercare have them bexie.

solo · 13/11/2008 22:56

I HATE them!

mumnosbest · 13/11/2008 23:02

DS would never use it, went straight from boob and bottle to cup. DD is 14 months, she started using one at 11 months (me holding it) then by 12 months she was holding it herself. I still only put a little in it as I've learnt when she's had enough she enjoys throwing it

Dottoressa · 13/11/2008 23:06

Ugh to "doidy cups" (I can barely bring myself to type that!!)

We did have a two-handled cup without a lid, which was good when the DCs were very small.

But I don't think that answers your question, for which I apologise!

BexieID · 14/11/2008 10:26

My 2 local Boots are really small and don't have them. Mothercare means a trip into Glasgow, as will a bigger Boots. Might ask my mum to look in Boots and see if she'll be near a Mothercare seeing as she and dad are up the week after next. Tesco do them without the handles.

giddykipper · 14/11/2008 11:16

Do you want one FFP Bexie?

I'm in the process of clearing out all DS's old cups

giddykipper · 14/11/2008 11:17

Sorry, ignore Bexie, I thought you were after a doidy cup

VeryHungryKatypillar · 14/11/2008 13:14

I dunno either pudding. DD is 7 months today and I've been offering her water in the Doidy for three weeks now. She has started to take some in her mouth (as I pour a bit in when she opens it) but it does tend to come straight back out again. Then she thinks this is funny and progresses to blowing raspberries in the water. Marvellous.

She did seem to swallow some yesterday though, so maybe it will just take lots and lots of time?

And water must be such a disappointment after yummy milk.

pudding25 · 14/11/2008 19:47

I think I may leave my beautiful doidy for a couple of months and just try the non spill tommee tippee number I also bought. The mess she is making is already so bad that I don't know if I can handle water everywhere too

I bought a doidy - it's now been relegated to a bath toy. According to the HV babies are supposed to 'lap' from them rather than drink as we would. No such luck wsith DD - it just goes over her head.

Tommee Tippee seems to have hit the spot eventually but it has taken about a month for her to get used to it.
