Snacks

Not really sure if this should go in weaning now, as DS is 12 mths but anyhow.
I tend to give fruit/yoghurt/rice cakes as snacks, but have some concerns about sugar levels of fruit in particular.
Am looking for inspiration really - what other snacks do you give that aren't sugary?
Thanks

Oatcakes are a must. Toast. Cheese. Sweetcorn is a favourite. Cherry tomatoes, carrot/celery sticks?

toast
carrot sticks
cucumber chunks
crackers
cheese
red peppers
popcorn (you can make it yourself to avoid th sugar or salt processed stuff)

thank you, that's brilliant.
he isn't very good with raw hard food like carrot and celery (he doesn't have any teeth yet and he tends to give up and just swallow whole or spit out), but there are some ace ideas, thank you

I read an article that said to make sure babies/toddlers dont miss out on high calorie food as some parents these days are so concerned that there children are eating healthy enough that they are missing out on the fat content that they still need on a daily basis, and the calories to burn as they burn up so much energy in a day.

So this article suggested to use the snacks as an chance to give them these type of foods ie: cheese, biscuits, hot cross buns etc.

I found this really interesting as i had always worried about my ds being feed healthy and had never considered that they do need alot of calories as they are on the go so much.

I had another thought. Cheese scones

thanks didsnbump. i do need to find some recipes for things like hot cross buns. ds is allergic to eggs, so i need to be careful with cakes and things. mind you, he is, how shall i put this, certainly 'well built' that i don't think he has a calorie problem.

iatemakkapakka - thanks. ps i love your name!

potato cakes, pita bread.

FeelingLucky · 13/11/2008 20:57

I thought fruit was good for them.

Anyway, cooked carrots, peas, Nigella's cheese star biscuits (no eggs, just cheese. flour and butter)

likessleep · 13/11/2008 21:00

yeah feelinglucky, i think fruit is good for them, but my ds was eating for both snacks each day and i started thinking that maybe fruit is better with a meal, in terms of his teeth?
what book is that nigella recipe in? i have a couple, the domestic goddess and the quick one. they sound good!
tortilla - i will try potato cakes (pitta he has quite a bit of).
