BLW - is your blw toddler a "good" eater?

one of the reasons I'm trying blw with dd is that ds is such a fussy eater/control freak over food. I think one of the bonuses for weaning this way is meant to be a child who will eat a range of foods. So how are your toddlers with food?

Mine is fine. Some days she'll eat next to nothing others she'll eat everything in sight. However she's not fussy about what she eats particularly. I've never made her seperate meals and she is generally open to experimenting. I think all kids can be faddy though, I think BLW helps the parents relax about food too which contributes to a more relaxed child at meal times.

at 18m, ds is a v good eater. The only thing that went overboard wholesale was curry! nearly everything else goes down well and he will pretty happily try new things too.

of course I realise this cannot last...

Ds was BLW'd from the off (well, we started at 24 weeks but YKWIM!) and is now a FABULOUS eater and will eat everything in sight, bar broccoli, which I can't really argue with.

Bear in mind though, that he didn't eat "properly" until he was nearly 9 months and caused me untold worry because I thought he'd never eat!

TALLULAHBELLE · 05/11/2008 21:00

Did BLW with DD now 16 months. Eats anything & everything & I very rarely make separate meals (only if having takeaway or something pretty unhealthy) unlike friends with DC's similar ages who are still cooking & freezing batches of different 'children's' meals. My DD eats what we eat, we eat our meals together & I can take her anywhere & know she will get fed easily enough.

Only thing is - still not keen to use a spoon so she will eat porridge, soup, yoghurt etc with her hands which gets very messy.

AMamaForObama · 05/11/2008 21:03

all mine cracking eaters the truly most blw one adores cabbage at 20mths
Not somethings either of his siblings embraced...
Butnow they (14 and 6) see him eating it, they want some
Honestly
I just love being free to open wine at feeding time
And no bibs needed here now either, very clean.
Which I had not predicted

DS isn't quite a toddler yet at 9mo (although he's trying very hard to join the club!) but he's BLW and, in terms of the range of food he eats, is a great eater.

He is very messy, but eats everything from rice to baked beans with his hands. He ate his cottage bean pie beautifully this evening, although he did stick his yoghurt spoon in his eye (I think he got distracted).

The only time I cook seperate food for him these days is if we're going out(which we finally managed last night) or are not going to manage to get tea cooked in time for his 5pm eating slot!

He gets offered most of what we eat, and so far has only really rejected fruits - strawberry, banana and kiwi - although he does like things like oranges, mango, pineapple so no complaints there.

He does have days where he eats nothing, and just BF (sometimes its my fault as I haven't managed to time naps/feeds right and he is too tired to pay attention and just wants milk), particularly recently when he had a nasty cold and was teething at the same time, but then he goes back to his normal, two hands full of food self (Jacket potato with beans and cheese is hilarious to watch!)

miaow
Ds2 ate no raw fruit under 1 but now devours everything weirdly
No idea why but kept offering. He only eats apple if whole though very cute but did choke on peel a bit at first but now aged20mths can polish off whole apple very neatly!!!

ds2 is a good eater, but he's just getting to the stroppy 2's and i'm noticing more refusals.. he's definitely better than ds1 though who wasn't blw'd!

it also helped ds1 to try new foods as he flat out refused and pretty much didn't eat until ds2 was blw'd!

we still call broccoli 'trees' too!

threetinytots · 05/11/2008 21:35

DS(5) was not BLWed, and consequently(I think) is very fussy. DD1(3.10) and DD2(1) were both BLWed and are fantastic eaters. Both fruit bats, the only veg that DD1 refuses is mushroom.

PigeonPie · 05/11/2008 21:36

DS1 is 3 next week and will eat virtually anything, the more flavour the better. He didn't 'get' food till he was about 9 months but there was not stopping him then - don't think PILs could quite cope with risotto with fingers!

DH has a theory that often children are fussy if they've only been weaned on bland jar food they then don't want home-cooked food which has more flavour. I'm not sure about this, but I do know that I've never held off on putting pepper or mustard etc in what we eat as I've got to eat it too!

DS2 is 9 months and appears to be heading the same way as his brother. He 'got' food as soon as he was put in the high chair at 24 weeks (had to, couldn't keep him in the 'bouncy chair' on the floor as he tried to escape too many times) and has been eating proper meals since about 28 weeks (before that I just gave fruit and veg).

I love BLW

DD BLW from 6.5 months as always hated mushy food and still does. Just turned 2 and has always been what people say was a fussy eater. Didn't really eat much at all until she was 13 months old. Still has quite a limited diet and hates anything with sauces. Pregnant with no.2 and not sure I'll do BLW again to be honest! She was totally BF and laugh when people say oh BF babies get lots of different tastes through the milk so that they will accept all sorts of new foods. Her lack of eating drove me slightly insane as you can probably tell. I don't care if the next baby doesn't sleep as long as he eats.

hazeyjane · 13/11/2008 18:53

dd1 was weaned early (on paediatrician's advice) and i was the queen of purees. She goes up and down is having a particularly fussy phase now (2.8), the other day she ate 1 small triangle of marmite on toast, 1 egg - hardboiled, a small handful of cashew nuts and some flapjack (she is never fussy about cake!).

dd2 (18 months) was blw at 6 months, and usually eats everything, but has just started a more 'assertive' phase (ahem) and has started throwing food on the floor, even if she likes it. She has also started to ask me to feed her with a spoon, which is just plain odd!

Agree that blw and eating same foods, as a family helps the parents relax about child eating/not eating.

cmotdibbler · 13/11/2008 20:28

DS is 2.5 and BLW. He does, and has always, eaten anything and everything. If we are eating things, he will always eat them - especial favourites are sushi, calamari, and curry. Adores fruit and veg, this evening he got a cauliflower out of the kitchen and settled down to eat bits.

He uses cutlery (fork, knife, spoon and chopsticks) very well too.
