I saw this earlier but couldn't face getting involved... am already all hunned out on Bounty.

passedwitsend · 24/10/2008 20:17

And seriously, do they honestly believe that their gp's have told them that the guidelines are 'myths'. I've had a couple of glasses of wine and my fingers are itching, but going to stay out of it otherwise I may write a post which looks something like this * *. Seriously, 9 weeks?????? AAAAAARRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I know

Were you a Bounty convert? Or have I mixed you up with someone else?

passedwitsend · 24/10/2008 20:24

Nope. I've been a lurker/occasional poster on various sites, mostly babyworld and babycentre but never really got properly involved in any. More of a reader than a writer. However, mumsnet is definitely the one that fits me the best iykwim. Definitely not a bounty girl, can't you tell, I write in (almost) full sentences! If you're ever on breastfeeding you may have seen a few desperate posts from me over the past few weeks.

Thinking about it, I should really fill in a little profile thing and do a proper introduction as I think I'm going to be hanging out here a lot more. Just glancing into the others when I'm feeling a bit rubbish to help me realise I am a good mum.

Arrgghhh

I've never read anything like it! as well at the ones who say something like "Personally I think 9 weeks is too early, I think that they're only ready at 3 months/14 weeks/some other random age"

Neenztwinz · 24/10/2008 20:43

Welcome, passedwitsend - how old is your LO(s)?

passedwitsend · 24/10/2008 20:47

Thank you. She's 5 months old now, can't believe I'm saying that to be honest, its gone so fast! Obviously she's on 3 meals a day and loves a packet of crisps or bombay mix for a snack. She has a glass of wine in the evening to help her sleep, I wanted to try and last a bit longer on that front but she was desperate for it and took a whole minute to settle so I had to start early. Now she goes down a dream and sleeps through until midday.

Sorry, sarcasm not very clever but I've had a hard week and a glass of wine!

oh am particularly loving lisajoys posts - she says first off that she was weaned at 12 weeks by her mum and wsa okay etc.

Later she goes on to say that it was government guidelines that gave her IBS......

Hmm. THink she might be missing the obvious connection there.......

littleducks · 24/10/2008 21:02

The guidelines are to do with government targets, I was told this by my HV and my Mum is also a nursery nurse and their information on weaning is all about the TARGETS. Ideally the government would like every mother to breastfeed until 6months and then start weaning and so this is why the official guidelines say 25/26 weeks. My GP said there isn't a link between early weaning and any problems later on and parents are mislead by some of the information that they are given. My HV is great she is very much just a friendly face if I need to chat, she definately doesn't look down on me for not following the guidelines. I guess I'm just lucky!

targets for what exactly???????

EffiePerine · 24/10/2008 21:06

well you have to allow for fuckwits

EffiePerine · 24/10/2008 21:07

can I post this again?

AnarchyAunt · 24/10/2008 21:07

Oh you know, targets for reducing allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, gut problems...

Nothing important, just nanny state-ism.

SharpMolarBear · 24/10/2008 21:10

I had meningitis at 18 years
Never did me any harm

AnarchyAunt · 24/10/2008 21:13

I had unprotected sex at 21.

I was fine.

Not sure what that little blonde mini me is doing following me everywhere though.

My twins are 5.5 months old. Have started weaning them. They are much more settled now (yes, know all the reasons behind the guidelines but still thought i no my babas hun)

SharpMolarBear · 24/10/2008 21:22

5.5 months is not 9 weeks!
I weaned at 23 weeks. I agree that the guidelines should be known and followed if possible, but in reality lots of people wean at around 17/18 weeks. 9 weeks is ridiculous!

SharpMolarBear · 24/10/2008 21:22

And I'm very impressed that with 5mo twins you have time to MN

VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/10/2008 21:27

the meningitis didnt do my mum any harm either. the medicine that she was given for it did though. tis a bugger thats for sure.

Neenztwinz · 24/10/2008 21:27

They are both asleep now and I am on my third glass of wine .

Glad not everyone on here waited till 26 weeks on the dot. Reading this board makes you terrified you have done your babies major harm even though you are only a few weeks 'early'.

wonderstuff · 24/10/2008 21:28

Scary scary stuff. Mumsnet gives you the impression that the majority of people are sane and rational, then you see these other sites and you realise we are a minority doncha think? The IBS thing was classic. A friend of a friend was saying how she weaned at some ridiculously early age, didn't do her lo any harm, then went on to say how he had suspected stomach cancer and loads of digestive problems, she hadn't made the link at all!!!

SharpMolarBear · 24/10/2008 21:29

VVVQV How come? Sorry if that upset you, was just doing to anecdotal evidence thing. Am being an idiot today. Sorry

hunkermunker · 24/10/2008 21:30

Littleducks, what do you think "targets" means?

Why are they there? To bully mothers into breastfeeding for longer?

Not really working, are they? Not with HVs and nursery nurses like yours and your mum about!
