red marks on face at breakfast time?

Hi
My DS is 27 weeks and have started weaning. At breakfast he seems to get red marks on face where the food has been on his chin. I have been giving wee bit baby porridge or today tiny bit weetabix.

Could it be allergy? It is not a temperature thing, food is cold, but that is what it looks like, almost like the food has been hot on skin. It goes away within 30 mins.

Not like that with any other food stuff at any other time of day and has taken yoghurt and cream cheese ok so other dairy seems fine.

Could be a mild dairy allergy/intolerance. Yoghurt and cream cheese are more well tolerated than plain milk.

Try dropping a couple of drops of milk on him at a time when he's not having anything else and see what happens.

The same thing has been happening to my DS who's just about 8 months. I ran the milk experiment and voila. Red marks. And here I was thinking I was just poking him with the spoon . So now my questions are: is this something that's generally outgrown and what do I make his porridge with (I don't really want to pump for the little bit of milk we need)?

DS had this reaction to cows' milk, although he was fine with yoghurt and cheese.

He was allergy tested as part of his eczema treatment and dairy came up negative; the paed said it was evidently a mild sensitivity that he would likely grow out of.

He is now 20m and does seem to have outgrown the sensitivity (although I still can't get him to drink cows' milk (but that's another story!).

You can make porridge with water although it might not taste as nice!

Make porridge with calcium fortified rice or oat milk. Generally outgrown in the early years. Dd outgrew hers at 20 months.

my ds is dairy intolerant and I just use water to make his porridge. I thought it would be manky but actually it's really ok.
sometimes add a splash of oat milk

my dd was like this - I used to make her porridge with water and then add a bit of coconut cream to it for extra calories

Thanks for the tips! The coconut cream sounds yummy. I'll be sure to check what happens when I give him some yogurt later today.

Could Actimel have the same effect? I am trying (so far with little success) to encourage my BF 5 month old DS to take formula. What other formula could I try?

VeryHungryKatypillar · 06/11/2008 15:32

DD gets red marks on her face after each meal, no matter what I feed her. Went to GP and he thought it was unlikely to be an allergy to everything, but a reaction to having stuff on her face generally. You know how babies tend to get blotchy skin when they're teething and drooling everywhere? I reckon it must be like that.

She has ezcema on her trunk, arms and legs, but this didn't get worse after meals so I'm thinking he's right.

If you're concerned, get to the GP's to reassure yourself.

kms My DS has this (nearly 2 now). He also gets weals on his body. I have not been able to identify a specific food although I suspect anything with citric acid.

The key question to ask yourself is, despite the sometimes quite alarming marks does he suffer? If not, then the reaction is probably worth the nutritional benefit iyswim.

We sometimes go to a greek restaurant with my family and we amuse my DS by drawing a picture on his arm with taramasalata and then wiping it off. The picture comes up almost like a burn but my DS thinks it is the funniest thing and doesn't seem to bother him at all.
