Started weaning ds on really small amounts of purees/baby rice once a day as he seemed to be showing all the signs ie feeding a lot (am bf ing), grabbing at our food etc. Takes it well but (i think he'll take anything you put in his mouth) has become unsettled 3 days in & showing signs of an upset tummy, as if he's trying to poo all the time but can't and when he does it's really runny, not taking as much milk from me, generally a bit under the weather. Now am wishing had held on a couple more weeks so I'd known he was definitely ready, and gone down the blw route.

Should I perservere with solids knowing that he's a bit off, or just feed him milk for now and try him again at 6 months (bearing in mind he takes the food well and practically grabs the spoon off me) Or once you start with purees and stuff is that it and do you have to carry on?

I know it's only a couple of weeks til he's the reccomended age, I'd have been happy to wait but dh going on about how ready he is and other mums starting made me think 'why not?' but now feel like was poss not the best decision and feel guilty especially as he's become unsettled since starting to eat solids. Should I go with my gut and stop for now or am I just worrying over the sake of a few weeks and carry on with small amounts?

I would stop and wait personally. The guidelines are there for a reason and that is the reason why I have held off myself from weaning.

If he has an upset tummy, that should be a signal enough that his digestive system isn't ready for the transition from milk to food.

That sounds quite arsey actually, sorry about that, wasn't meant to

SharpMolarBear · 16/10/2008 12:28

why not stop for a day or two and see how he is? or if he grabs food off your plate in the meantime, let him

I would use the bad tummy as a guide rather than the age. The guidelines are actually "around six months" not "26 weeks exactly" so 5.5 months in itself is not necessarily a problem.

I'd stop and wait until he's a it better and bit more settled, and let him take control of what he eats by BLW, which you've clearly already read about.

There's nothing to stop you switching to offering him just finger foods now and letting him get on with it.

Most likely thing is that he just has an upset tummy (they do). You should still hold back though because the best thing for an upset tummy is breast milk (sterile and has everything they need). So no you were not ness. too early but yes you should probably leave it for a week or so.

firstly, don't feel guilty. I would just hold off on solids for a little while and try finger food first off - a while back another MNer said that puree can be more likely to cause constipation so that may be the reason. Your DS will not miss the food at all - my 9 MO DS just had a tummy bug and was on BFs for a few days - apart from trying to grab my toast he was fine and just fed more. So your DS will definitely not get confused or disappointed if you hold off the solids for a while longer.

Thanks guys, everything everyone has said seems to have made sense to me and I think I'll feel better holding off for a bit and letting ds be my guide
