Does introducing solids help with colic/windiness

DS (4 months old) has always been a windy baby and suffered bouts of severe colic (we're going through a bad spell now coupled with teething) and friends have mentioned that situation should improve when he starts taking solids.

GP advise is that I could risk an allergic reaction if I start weaning before 6 months.

Is it worth risking an allergic reaction to eliminate the colic ?

I really don't think is going to make any difference TBH.

As for the allergic reactions, do you have a history of allergies in your family? iif you do then hold... I know that my family is not exactly allergic (or at least I thought they weren't) and DS has an unbelievable long list of allergies.

Knowing what I know now, I would have done things different regarding weaning, I just followed the average guidelines when I should have used the ones that are especially recommended for allergic families. But then they are not easily available until your child is showing some very serious signs of concern.

In a nutshell, no, it is not worth it.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 06/10/2008 00:31

No, introducing solids probably wont help.

As an aside....DD was very 'windy' and was breastfed.

Turns out she was allergic to cows milk protein which was filtering through my milk in small doses.

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!! Sorry to be bossy but it really won't help. Could make it worse and cause all sorts of trouble in the future. If youcan. I'd wait til at least 20 weeks, preferably 24. xxxxxxxxxxx

no, it doesn't help. all the opposite! when you make purees/baby rice, these have lots of air bubbles trapped so your LO will get more colic.

Pemberley · 06/10/2008 22:08

Thanks for the advise all.

I think I will definitely wait until DS is 24 weeks at least. Plus I am asthmatic and so there's a chance he may have inherited some allergies from me

Chandra - would love to get my hands on those guidelines too!

VVV QV- so, did you cut out milk from your diet when you found out about LO's allergy?

I was told it wouldnt help, some people warned me that it would make it worse.

I waited until 5.5 months but it did make a huge difference to my DD. Whether that was just timing though, will never know.

Pemberley · 07/10/2008 23:01

Oh good. So, there is hope that things will get better when I start. Thanks Pamelat.

Not long to go now...and if only I could get him to take some water. As I've been exclusively bf DS does not take a bottle which may prove challenging when I do start him on solids.

Hello Pemberley

You have probably tried it already but my DD will only drink water if I am drinking it from a beaker (pint size one!) and we alternate sips of it. I think its just a game to her but it gets some water down, and an awful lot more on the kitchen floor
