Here it says extra sales of foods sold for 4 months+ account for over $1 billion annually, and that was 7 years ago!

So big money at stake for the companies...

I can't find anything concrete about the law changing. Just lots of reasons why it should, and lots of people saying it will... but not when.

OP posts:
VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 12/10/2008 00:13

The law changed in 2003, after the 2001 conference, I linked it on the guidelines post.

nappyaddict · 12/10/2008 00:39

what law?

tiktok · 12/10/2008 09:38

There's no law in the UK about labeling from mths - happy to be corrected if someone knows different, but AFAIK it's guidance about labelling only.

tiktok · 12/10/2008 09:39

6 mths, I mean.

VS/ sigh [http://my.bounty.com/forums/TreeLeaves.asp?btyOrder=1&btysubid=190&btythdid=1638118&btyGrpID=&btyIM G= this does make it all feel slightly worthwhile]. Even if it's only 1 person at least something's getting through.

Thatis just lovely to read

VS - is it your dd who suffers with problems possibly related to early weaning? if so you might want to post on here some posters are saying god i don't why people get so emotional about this subject. i think your experience is definitely a valid reason as to why someone should get worked up about it.

TexasChainsawMoussaka · 20/10/2008 12:12

I was going to leave this alone but they're talking about weaning an 8 week old baby. The level of ignorance is scary...

kingcharlie · 20/10/2008 19:34

oh my good god. Unbelievable.

My baby son is five months this week and i'm not thinking of weaning untill he's six months.. but people are assuming that he is on solids allready - or should be?! e.g called my health visitor for advice about something else entirely and she asked if he was eating normally - i said yes (thinking she meant milk...) and then she said is he drinking milk ok.. i said he is only drinking milk nothing else... also his nursey that he started last week (as i had to go back 3 days a week - boo hoo) asked when he'd be starting solids... i said not yet!! they said but he's five months, i said and?!.....

kingcharlie · 20/10/2008 19:35

excuse the typos...

Notanexcitingname · 20/10/2008 22:17

Coming to this several centuries too late, but VS, about 67242post further up you asked about guidelines/medical advice from a while back.

My Grandmother (85) used to be a nurse and she still has her old text books, written in approximately 1930. The advice their is that breastmilk is the only food a child needs for the first 6 months of its life. Other foods should be introduced gradually, and there was a strict order given which related to teeth (!) , I can't remember it all, but bread was not until the first molar appear, and meat not until the canines through.

THere was decidedly sound advice given about childbirth too (like "don't like on your back, it's a Victorian affectation"). Where did it all go wrong?

stretchmarkSCREAM · 20/10/2008 22:23

Makes sense with the teeth thing. Sounds like a fascinating book!!!

AnarchyAunt · 21/10/2008 08:43

That textbook sounds fascinating as it is clearly linking readiness for different foods to physical signs, rather than to some vague 'instinct'.

OP posts:
TexasChainsawMoussaka · 21/10/2008 08:50

Is there any relationship between teeth and gut maturity though? I've heard of 12 week olds getting teeth but I wouldn't start on solids at that age...

AnarchyAunt · 21/10/2008 08:55

No unlikely.

But its still interesting as an idea, and generally makes some sense. I think its saying 'canines (pl) are through, so thats usually later than 6mths. Canines (as name suggests) are meat eating teeth IYSWIM?

And molars do tend to be even later though iirc

OP posts:
Notanexcitingname · 21/10/2008 08:58

It is fascinating. i wish I'd borrowed it!

I agree that there is unlikely to be any relationship between gut maturity and teeth. (and I have heard of babies being born with teeth!) But is it any more likely that there will be a relationship between sitting and gut maturity? Some babies sit at 4 months.
In any case, it did start off by saying that (breast)milk is all that's needed to start with. And teeth are certainly a better guideline than this vague instinct that everyone seesm to have. And early teething is much rarer than the appanret prevalence of "ready" babies today

Apologies for appalling grammar. it's early

TexasChainsawMoussaka · 21/10/2008 09:14

I think I got up too early as well, didn't read the bit about milk only til 6 months properly.

stretchmarkSCREAM · 21/10/2008 10:27

I didn't mean teeth = gut-maturity btw!! I meant canines are for meat eating really!! That's what 'makes sense!' Canines are generally through later as well though.

TexasChainsawMoussaka · 21/10/2008 16:02

Why do these people bother asking questions if they're just going to ignore all the advice which doesn't fit with what they've already decided to do?

???

TexasChainsawMoussaka · 21/10/2008 16:11

And why not just lie them on their backs and funnel the food in? Idiots.

I did swear I was never going on bounty again but DS has been asleep in the sling for over 2 hours and I got a bit bored.

Must try and get myself banned so I have to give it up...

stretchmarkSCREAM · 21/10/2008 16:13

As an aside, don't you just love the fact that 'our' nicknames on bounty are quite witty, whereas the 'real' bountyers(!) are just SarahLou3000!!

As you were!!

highlandmam · 21/10/2008 21:07

MrsJamin, yay for you!!! I just want to let you know that not all posters on bc are illiterate chavs who disregard "proffessional" (roffle) advice because they want to feed their baby chocolate buttons at 10 weeks. I googled your username so don't be surprised if someone else tracks you down here. Actually, do be surprised, I would be if many of them had the braincells to do it pmsl

I think I might stick around here, I like you guys!
