Going on holiday just after DS turns 6 months - how to do food?

I am thinking of doing BLW this time but am a bit unsure of how to do meals when we are away...

We are staying in a hotel so will be having the majority of our meals in restaurants.
What sort of things can I order for DS2 that he can pick at?
What things can I take with me as back up in case there isnt anything suitable to order?

He will be 6 months and 2 weeks then. Will he be having food at just one meal a day then? or do I start BLW by offering food at all 3 meals straight away and just let him decide what to eat and when?

2point4kids - hello. If it was me, and my little one was fine weight-wise and sleeping well, I would wait to start to wean until I was back from hols. I think I would be concerned about food hygeine if I was unable to prepare the food myself.
Have a lovely holiday.

If it helps, DD3 is 7 months, we are not BLW, but I do give her food other than puree if she is interested - you will be surprised what they can/do eat. As someone else on the thread said, in the early days milk is still the majority of the nutrition, so don't fret - if you are sure the food looks OK to eat (and tbh you wouldn't be eating it yourself if it wasn't) then give him little bits of your food. We had mackerel salad tody - I gave DD3 a stick of peeled cucumber that she sucked/chewed for a while, some little bits of boiled salad potato that I fed her, and a few bits of mackerel that I fed her. She then sucked/chewed some slices of peeled apple contentedly. Just go with the flow and if he wants something (as long as it's not on the "banned" list eg honey, soft cooked egg etc) then let him try, either as finger food or you feeding. That's my half-way house on BLW.

Ooh that was about what I did: fed purees (mostly moulied or blended veg then fish'n'veg, chicken'nveg) and jars but would always offer a bit of anything I was eating that wasn't riddled with sugar and salt or a health risk in any other way.
Actually (screaming great ponce alert) when DS was about 9 months old I went to dinner at a friend's house and took him with me and fed him some samphire which he loved.

my pal was on a big holiday abroad until her wee boy was 7 and a half months old, she just left it. pretty much gave him bits of banana, washed fruit and bread crusts to muck around with but didn't think much about weaning until she got home. then she did BLW obv, cos he was already doing it for himself.

I think it's bad for the baby to wait too long after 6 months to wean, isn't it? I read that a baby's iron starts to get v depleted by about 6 and a half months and that you need to be more worried about it if the baby was premature. If your baby came late, I think there is less to worry about because natural stores of iron are really boosted in the last couple of weeks in the womb.

lol. this thread should be renamed 101 weaning myths.

if it were me going on holiday i would just leave it til we got back. but then i did blw so i am a little bit cerrrr-azy.

MrsJamin · 04/08/2008 12:48

Bessie123, iron levels just START to deplete, and the iron in breastmilk is more 'bioavailable', i.e. easier for a baby to get at, than the iron in solids, so you definitely should not get stressed about starting at 6 months on the dot. If I were you 2point4kids, I'd just maybe take some things like breadsticks and ricecakes, then see what is there on holiday like fruits, steamed veg from your plate etc. Then your DS can just investigate tastes and textures and practise holding food etc, it will take the pressure off starting when you're home as you might feel pressurised to up the pace of weaning as you've started late.

Bessie123 · 04/08/2008 20:10

Ah well I wish I'd known that; I would have waited till we came back from holiday, too. Dd is only 5 and a half months and I just started weaning this week. She is loving the baby rice

2point4kids · 05/08/2008 08:48

MrsJamin - I'm not breastfeeding.. does that mean iron level deplete sooner?
