Baby-friendly shepherds pie - how to make it tasty without gravy etc?

making this for tea because I thought it might be a good thing for dd (7mths) to try - then realised I normally put gravy or stock in with the mince for tastiness - are there any salt-free alternatives to this?

she's ok to get mince at this age isn't she??

thanks!

DS loved mince at this age, and it's still his favourite way of eating meat - probably not too challenging to chew or digest.

We did find some salt free stock when we were weaning (Kallo make it, I think) but you probably can't get out to get some now, I don't expect?

I wouldn't put anything in, flavours are very different for babies than for our jaded palates, so just the taste of the meat and the vegetables will probably be plenty for your LO. DP used to make a tiny one for DS with no salt/stock in it, and then a big one for all of us with all the salt in.

no, i'm about to make it, I'm so organised in my weaning plans everything is a last minute hodge podge!!

but can look for that on next trip to shops, thanks

might make a little weensy separate one for her then as a taste free shepherds pie is a bit quease inducing tbh!!

I'd use a tin of tomatoes instead.

Caz10 · 09/07/2008 15:08

ooh good idea thank you

use baked beans

salt free ones of course

mumofmoo · 09/07/2008 15:10

second tinned tomatoes (chopped ones tend to have less pips etc than whole).

Caz10 · 09/07/2008 15:29

my tinned tomatoes have salt in them!

is this cos I buy the cheapies??

much less than the gravy though, so lesser of 2 evils and for all she will eat anyway I'm sure it's ok

I've got napolina ones (bogof at tesco last visit!) - just checked no salt. Must remember to check next time as tend to buy whatever is cheapest/on offer.

By the time its mixed up with all other ingredients I'm sure salt content will be minimal.

Caz10 · 09/07/2008 15:40

me too mumofmoo, and we've only just started solids, so not really in the way of checking. I suspect I'm about to be amazed by how much salt we've been eating, eeek

I would say make a small one with no gravy or anything. As said before, teh taste of the meet etc is enough at that age

RegenerAitch · 09/07/2008 16:41

tomato puree's not bad for salt either.

Legoleia · 09/07/2008 16:44

we whack a bit of mint in ours

designerbaby · 09/07/2008 20:36

Loads of veggies, (peas, carrots, mushrooms, onion, sweetcorn, celery, whatever...) a splash of worcestershire sauce, plenty of tomatoes, smidge of brown sugar to take edge off toms, fresh herbs...

...nom nom...
