BLW - They don't really EAT that much do they? A few questions if you please.

LuckySalem · 07/07/2008 21:55

DD is now 6 months and we started her early on bland puree due to reflux.

However, now she's 6 months I want to go into BLW and let her try what she wants.
Ive done that for a few days and today gave her a couple of cucumber sticks. She sucked at them but didn't really eat them (I assumed it was cos she has no teeth so can't get chunks to chew and swallow) however, I thought about yesterday and she had carrots which ok quite abit went down but we definatly didn't have a clean bowl like we do with purees.

Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?
Also we went onto purees to coat her stomach and allow the milk to stay down. Do you think I can cut the purees out now and doing BLW will coat her stomach enough IYKWIM

Oh another question - I'm a crap cook and apart from frozen veg all I have is frozen meat etc (battered chicken, fish fingers etc) so can I give her stuff like this or should I be getting fresh things for her?

Any ideas what? I'm going shopping tomorrow.

Sorry for all the questions.

Desi - I thought from 6 months they could have milk except for a full on drink? Am I wrong if so, its good you told me....

Oh another thing (really sorry for all these questions) DP wants to give her ice cream is there such a thing as babyproof ice cream? He's been giving her "ali pops" ice pops made from fruit juice which she loves but he wants to see her with ice cream (funny that considering he doesn't want a mess - lol)

Desiderata · 07/07/2008 23:05

The general advice is not to put a baby on full cows milk until they're a year old.

But with regard to the cereals, I was referring to the mess

Desiderata · 07/07/2008 23:06

Oh, I see what you mean! Yes, a drizzle in a ceral bowl won't go amiss.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 07/07/2008 23:06

I took some fab pics of my ds (nearly 8mths) wiring into creamy prawn linguine tonight- he just sticks his fist in and grabs a big handful, then hovers over the plate! He is actually less messy than his sisters (aged 4 and 3), as he wears one of those bibs with the scoop, and recycles what he drops into it! I am literally amazed at what he manages to eat, and he seems to really enjoy it! I'm finding it a lot of fun!

Desiderata · 07/07/2008 23:07

Do try some eggy bread in the morning, though.

Cut it into tiny squares .. give her two, and eat the rest yourself!

RegenerAitch · 07/07/2008 23:07

i think you can use a splash, but it's deffo NOT to replace their milk intake iyswim?
i just let dd go with some quality ice-cream. it was an horrific mess then and still is, now that she's 2 and a half.

LuckySalem · 07/07/2008 23:09

Ok i'll see what I can find in the ice cream dept to satisfy Dp.

How do I make eggy bread then? Is it like boiled eggs and soldiers? - (told you I can't cook)

OP posts:
RegenerAitch · 07/07/2008 23:10

oh yes the scoop bib is essential. don't give eggs if there are allergies in the family, or unless you've decided to give egg iykwim? some people do leave egg until later, you just have to take a view on it. i think i waited awhile, but for no firm reasons i can recall.

LuckySalem · 07/07/2008 23:11

We got no allergies to any food in our family (just to horses!! lol) that's why I wasn't overly worried about starting solids earlier than recommended.

So I'll try eggy bread for the morning and see if I can donate these pots of food to a friend.

i always thought that full fat milk as part of a meal was fine from 6 months but not as a drink untill 1 year?

you could use breast/formula milk if you are worried though

RegenerAitch · 07/07/2008 23:12

dip some sliced bread into a bowl of raw egg (whisked with a fork) for a good few mins and then fry it in a pan. it's delicious. keep an eye on the salt in the bread, maybe no cheese or other high salt stuff for the rest of the day.
oh, and pasta and pesto. a lifesaver.

LuckySalem · 07/07/2008 23:15

Cheers for the recipe. That seems easy.

Will look for pesto (got LOADS of pasta in cupboard) I do'nt think I've ever tried it though so.....

I MUST get a dining table too so we all sit together. Seems horrid that we eat in front of tv (funny how your views change when you have a baby)

OP posts:
RegenerAitch · 07/07/2008 23:56

you don't need much pesto, just a teaspoon or so, it lasts for ages. quite a strong flavour but ime babies bloomin' love it. hope the reflux stays away for you all, it sounds like a miserable thing.

LuckySalem · 08/07/2008 13:15

I've got a really stupid question can she have a cup of tea? If so, can I give her a splash of cows milk or do I make it with formula milk?

I'm expecting a no cos of caffiene but thought I'd ask..

Tried to do eggy bread but had no eggs or bread lol
Had a banana instead - which was ok but not much went in her mouth. More of it got squished into her highchair!! lol

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 08/07/2008 13:24

i personally wouldn't because of caffeine and also the tannins in it mean iron doesnt get absorbed aswell.

ds has herbal teas though.

RegenerAitch · 08/07/2008 14:10

why would she want tea, though? she's just a baby, milk or water is fine for thirst.

jafina · 08/07/2008 20:11

Luckysalem, not sure if you are still watching this thread but just wanted to say that my dd who is almost 10 months old is doing really well on BLW and appears to eat virtually nothing. it really stresses dh out but she is THRIVING. Good luck!

Oh and some other food ideas that my dd loves, plain pasta in a bowl along with some grated cheddar. Grate the cheese big and your lo can pick the bits up easily. My dd also loves dried apricots and prunes but not the really dry ones, the sort of squishier ones IYKWIM (or you could soak them in water for a bit). DD is INSANE for bananas but I have to ration them as they seem to bung her up. They are the perfect food to take out with you though.....And she also likes those Organix carrot stick things, not sure how nutritious they are but they keep her happy and turn her face an interesting orange colour

LuckySalem · 08/07/2008 21:30

Thanks all,

Aitch I just thought of tea cos my earliest memory is drinking a "tup of t" out of a sippy cup without the lid and wondered whether she was old enough for that. No biggie!!

Thanks for the suggestions jafina - we're going away on Sunday so i'll make sure to pack a nana for her!

Oh forgot to say

Aaliyah had cottage pie today My dad always makes me tea on a tues so I asked him to make some for aaliyah and told him all he had to watch was salt. She LOVED it - gobbled loads up, feeding herself I may add all I had to do was load the spoon and give it her the right way and off she went.

Aitch thanks for the ideas about eggy bread! DP made her some today and she ate a whole slice before deciding that was enough.
We're having some veg for lunch and DP is making her a nice dinner!

Lucky - saw you were talking about pesto and pasta earlier on this. I have some pics on my profile of my LO eating just that (yes, blatant mother of PFB showing off her PFB!!!). She also loves banana, butternut, eggy bread and carrots. Oddly, didn't think much at all of broccoli which seems to be a BLW staple.
(I used to post on the Jan post-natal thread as BWMum, so think my LO and yours are about the same age.)

LuckySalem · 10/07/2008 17:14

Thanks BMWmum (sorry but its gotta stick lol)

I'm gonna try her with some pasta tonight - don't have pesto though so think i'll give her a little cheese. It's the right kinda shape for her to eat.

Greedygirl · 11/07/2008 09:07

I was just about to post on the same topic - been doing BLW for about a month now and although he loves exploring and trying new foods, not much appears to be going down the hatch and he is still a real milk monster. Banana is his fave but, as someone already mentioned on here, it has bunged him up good and proper poor thing. I guess so long as he is continuing to thrive then I ought to stop stressing and just enjoy !

jafina · 11/07/2008 20:19

It is torture isn't it? I am such a control freak, I really wish you could just open up a little door in their heads and pour in 248.56 calories or whatever the perfect amount would be!!!!

I often think my dd has done really well and eaten a good few bits of pasta and then I find them tucked into the corners of her highchair - ARGH!! Found one in her pocket the other day at bathtime .

Well done on the cottage pie!

Am going to try eggy bread tomorrow.........

LuckySalem · 11/07/2008 20:54

Jafina - Watch with the eggy bread - Its get really soggy and finds loads of corners to hide in! lol
