Hello. I have been adding full fat milk to my DDs cereal in the morning and a bit of cheese to some of her meals (on advice by HV to help LO put on weight). A friend has said to me that I sjouldn't be doing this as it is too much fat and oil and leads to high colestrol etc.

Is this right? Not sure what to believe now. I thought it was fine? My DD is 6 months old and 13lb. She has lots of fruit and vege, both in finger foods and purees, as well as bits of toast etc, of which not alot gets eaten!

oh dear . babies and small children need fat. they must have full fat foods whilst they are growing.. some fat is vital for the absorption of certain vitamins too

full fat milk is fine on cereal and in cooking. some cheese is also fine, although not too much as can be salty!

babies dietary needs are different to adults.

even so, an adult having full fat milk and a bit of cheese is not a health disaster either

Children need the energy and vitamins in the small volumes of fat they eat. Adults don't.

Hydrogenated fat found in processed foods are prob best avoided for everyone - they're in shop made biscuits/cakes/burgers/sausages/ready meals etc etc.

You are doing the right thing and your friend is confusing the advice for adults with the advice for babies.

And for milk I have always done this...

Full fat until 2
Semi skimmed 2-5
Skimmed 5+

And in fact high cholesterol is a complex issue which can be due to the way your body processes fat not just what you eat!

Thanks for that, I thought that was the case, but wanted to get my facts right before I replied to her.

Her DD is on jars and packet foods so don't really know how she can coment on my DDs healthy, fresh diet which I make from scratch and do my best with! Was a bit annoyed actually

And her DD is 1 and having semi skimmed. And I have kept my mouth shut as I hate people who critizise other peoples parenting.
