Oh bloody hell - now I have the opposite problem - DD is dropping milk...

So, up until 2 weeks ago I couldn't get DD to eat solids in any quantity for love nor money. Then a visit to the Paed and a daily dose of vitamins and she's found an appetite for solids!

However, now she's refusing milk all over the place. She's almost 8 months.

Today, for example, looked like this:

7am: 2oz milk

8am: Small bowl of plum super porridge, 1 petit filous (I know, I know they're full of crap, but she doesn't like the 'good ones') 2 toast fingers with butter (don't know how much went in) 1 small plum. Bit of water.

11.45am: 2 cubes mash + 2 cubes broccoli + 2 cubes cheese sauce + 1 teaspoon marscapone. Bit of Hipp Organic choccy pud - probably about 3 cubes-worth.

3pm: 2 oz milk flatly refused any more

4pm: 1 small plum & some water

5.30pm: 1/3 large avocado and similar amount of Ellas Kitchen banana and apple stuff. Bit more Hipp Choccy pud (I know, I know but the jar is open and needs to be used) & some water.

7pm: 7oz formula

Later (11pm) I will do a dream feed when she will typically take between 4 and 6 oz.

Do I reduce the amount of solids she's having? (aaargh - after spending months praying for her to eat something!) to get a better blanace or is this OK?

Should I gradually reduce the dream feed so she's taking more morning milk? Or does it not really matter?

I can't believe I'm typing this after my posts just 2 weeks ago...

Evidently I'm trying to make sure she's having plenty of dairy elsewhere... and she's gaining weight again (hurrah!) and at quite a clip too.

I'm sure I will get this all figured out eventually and then I can stop bugging you all...

Thanks in advance for the pearls of wisdom I know you're about to bestow

babies never follow the plans properly.

for one, don't worry about the petit filous. there is very little difference nutritionally between sugar and grape juice (which is what the baby ones have).

also personally I would tend not to reduce the solids, but I would maybe give a milk feed at about 4 rather than 3 (so she's hungrier), and maybe add milk to food. you can add ebm or formula to porridge, mash and other things.

sounds like she's doing well though.

Thanks Senora... Maybe I'll never be happy - poor mite!?

I just keep reading about the 20oz she should be having and she's getting about 15 tops...

You're gith, though, if I move the 3pm feed closer to 4pm she'll probably drink more and eat less at 5pm naturally...

Maybe I could bring lunch back to 11.30 rather than the closer to 12 she's been having it.

I guess I'll jiggle the timings a bit and see if that helps before limiting her new found appetite!

Still VERY thrilled to see food disappearing into her and a little open mouth - today she got VERY grumpy with me at lunchtime when the spoon was a bit slow in coming - I was so HAPPY!?

Yeah but your DD is a bit older than mine - has she been having that much for long or just reduced recently??

I kind of think/know that I should try gradually cutting the dreamfeed so she'll take it in the morning instead - but I'm not confident she will so I'm a bit anxious about it...

But then, well I'm just an anxious kind of person evidently... Please don't let it rub off on you!?

Hmmm... she refused the afternoon bottle completely today. I suppose she had filled up with solids at lunch (although I wasn't aware of her having more than usual...)

Should I be concerned if she drops this feed?x

why not let her decide how much she wants of stuff rather than stressing about how much exactly is in each bottle/feed

maybe less solids (but I guess you started early from your post), but don't don't push one or the other?

designerbaby · 07/07/2008 13:58

Norma - You have a point - but there is a history of boob/bottle refusal, weight loss and solids refusal which probably makes me a little more anxious than most.

Yes, I did wean early, under medical advice because she wasn't drinking milk, but no, it didn't help. I did what I thought, and was told, was best at the time.

Anyway it seems she'll drink milk in her sleep without it affecting her appetite for solids, so she'll just have to have bottles as she goes down for naps/bedtime for the time being.

I'm thinking maybe it's her teeth again - she's drooling like Turner and Hooch. P'raps sucking hurts...

Hey db. My ds is 8 months and has started dropping milk too but loves his solids. Over the past few days I've been lucky to get 10oz into him a day. Don't know if it's a case of getting too distracted or teeth or just plain not wanting it. I was just going to wait a couple more days to see how it plays out and contact the hv if it continues as he has gone off his milk for a wk or 2 before. I think I read somewhere they just need to take iron supplements if they drop too much milk.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 07/07/2008 20:18

teeth can make a huge difference with DD- when she has some coming through you can NOT make her eat

designerbaby · 08/07/2008 19:41

BINGO - first tooth today!! We'll see if she's any keener for her bottle when awake...
