I've left it too long haven't I? 14mo bottles to cups not going well...

She jsut doesn't drink milk from cups. She'll have a few sips, and then just doesn't bother. Then she's starving and moany all the time. She drinks 8oz morning, afternoon and evening which i think is possibly quite a lot for a 14mo but that's what she needs. The most success I've had is from a mug exactly like mine but even then it was nowhere near 8oz and she soon went off it.

Not sure what to do, have tried a number of cups over a few months and nothing's really working. Any last ditch suggestions?

Is she spilling it or just not using it?

winestein · 03/07/2008 22:52

She is over 12 months - ditch the bottles and then she won't have a choice (or at least you won't cave in and offer her one ;-)

katpotat · 03/07/2008 22:56

I can't get my 14mnth old wee one to take milk from a cup either. Only managed to get her to take a bottle at a year,(to health visitors horror!) previously EBF .Going to try a new one i got today from Morrisons it has the body of a bottle and a soft spout, sort of cross between a cup and a bottle. Worth a try?

jellybelly25 · 03/07/2008 22:59

She just won't drink it. I've tried it with the afternoon and the evening feeds, and both times she just had a few sips and then lost interest in it, only to be starving later on, but very upset if i offered the cup again...

I worry about just ditching it because i don't think she'll drink any and I think she's too young to stop having milk.

She doesn't spill really because she's pretty good with putting the spouts down.

However, when she has it in a cup she usually spits a lot of it out down her chin (also a favourite trick with water), which i think means she has too much in her mouth at once... The teats on the bottles are 4 holes, so abotu as fast as you can get, and i didnt' think it would be that different for her but obviously it is.

i have an inbetweeny type cup its from tommy tippee and has a spout like trainer cups do but is latex like a bottle so feels very similar to a bottle!

also have you tried straws? my dd2 (1 yo) loves them

jellybelly25 · 03/07/2008 23:01

Ok katpotat that's funny actually someone once recommended a morrisons cup to me and i'd totally forgotten. might try that although there's no morrisons near me... (Time to plan tomorrow's mission)

thanks for suggestions so far

how about a beaker with a lid?

It wil damage your child for ever if she has a bottle for a bit longer. No-one will take a bottle of milk to school in their lunch box will they?

I tried every cup and beaker on the market trying to get DS1 off the bottle but he wasn't having any of it.

He's 6 now and drinks perfectly well out of a cup - obviously

Try not to worry about it

micci25 · 03/07/2008 23:02

tescos and tommy tippee do them too jellybelly!

Bowddee · 03/07/2008 23:04

My DS stopped spitting it down his chin when I gave him a drink of very cold water. He was sitting in the bath at the time. It went all down his front, he dropped the cup in shock but I was able to slosh warm water all over him.
I hope that wasn't cruel!

katpotat · 03/07/2008 23:09

jellybelly I could have started this thread. My Lo is doing exactly the same, will let you know how I get on with the cup

seeker · 03/07/2008 23:12

Will three bottles a day do her any harm? Why shouldn't she have bottles if that's what she wants?

jellybelly25 · 03/07/2008 23:15

lol bowddee, trouble is my dd2 doesn't seem to have any kind of issue with being soaking wet and cold and actually enjoys the feeling of it running down her chin, laughing as she does it

right i'll try some other things. am feeling better not being the only one whos not sorted yet!

which cup are you trying? - tommee tippee first cup is good

my 15 mo still has milk in a bottle and I probably won't stop that until she's 2
everything else is in the cup

TheBlonde · 04/07/2008 06:49

my dentist said bottles not an issue provided they are not filled with juice

jellybelly25 · 04/07/2008 09:56

I've got the avent spout things to go on the bottles instead, I have the normal cheap tommee tippee cup that she has all her other drinks out of, and I've tried a couple of non spill ones which were a waste of time.

I'd like it to be sorted by the time she's 2, but dont' want to be starting to change over then. I would never let it get to the point where she was still having bottles at nursery or whatver, but what worries me is that she just wont' drink any milk and i think she's too little.

My eldest dd just stopped drinking milk when the bottles went, somewhere between 18mo and 2, and I thought it was too soon. About a year later she started drinking loads of milk and has done ever since (she's 8) - obviously not in a bottle - but I think she could have done with it during that year and didnt' bother because she associated it so strongly with the bottle.

Knickers - she eats like a bloody pig! Is attempting cutlery but being a blw baby is quite happy with her hands...

I still think if it's only 3 a day, and she just drinks the milk and puts it down and doesn't walk round with it,it's not going to do her any harm, and I would just let her have the bottles. She'll give them up in her own time.
