Bleurgh - how awful is Babybel?

DS is 9 months and not eating much finger food - he's game to try anything but I have no idea what to give him...so I tried him with a Babybel today and ended up covered in an almight projectile puke (nice!).

He doesn't normally have this reaction to new food, so I tasted one and it's disgusting! I don't know if I've ever actually had one before, but had always seen it recommended in guides as good finger food.

Can anyone recommend a decent cheese to start them on?

They are pretty hideous but my dd loved them.

So much so that she once filched a pack in Waitrose and ate them through the net bag and wax.

Oh the shame.

just go for the cheese that you would eat - kids don't need to eat 'kid food' - just normal stuff. Try a nice mature cheddar! (or failing that, Gouda is very very mild).

Believe me, it is so worth getting them used to normal cheese early. That processed stuff is so bland that if they start to believe that it is real cheese, you've had it. And before you know it you're paying a fortune every week for edible plastic in individual packaging.

my dd hates them too, they are horrible. Reminds me of dairylea yrs back, i hated that!!

def get oyur dc into same cheese u like.

Unfortunately my dd enjoys cheese strings, and that is something I wish her peers had never taken into school in the packed llunches. they r very expensive.

giddykipper · 03/07/2008 21:57

Isn't it just Edam?

StellaDallas · 03/07/2008 21:58

No, it has a really odd consistency, sort of slimy.

About the cheese and salt thing. Is it all cheese that has alot of salt? I have been told to add cheese to DDs food to add caleries and help her put on weight. Now I am a bit confused as dont want to overload her with salt!

Lol, DS has eaten them through the wax too. Sticks of ordinary cheddar are what he gets now. It took at while for him to like cheese, I think he was well over a year.

It is not that it slowed down with weaning, it slowed down alot when she was about 3 months old (now 6 months). She is still 13lb and has dropped alot on the centile chart.
