9mo not eating enough solids

I have been trying to get my 9mo to eat from a spoon or finger foods since 6mo. She stubbornly refuses most offers, but will take maybe 2 small mouthfuls at each mealtime. How can I improve this? I have tried a variety of foods, textures and temperatures, any other ideas?

I'm no expert but just keep offering her little tastes of different things.

From what I've learnt on here, milk is the most important thing for her until she is one - so the main thing is not to worry and just make tasting new foods fun for her.

Good luck (I know how frustrating it can be!)

Sit her at the table every mealtime while the rest of you eat. Pick out any bits of your meal that you think she could pick up (which is pretty much anything, really), and put them on her highchair tray for her to play with. Try not to stress about whether she swallows anything.

She is getting all the nutrition she needs from milk. Sooner or later she will start eating - in her own good time.

I know how you feel. My DD is like this she is nearly 8mo and is not interested in food. I'm just trying to keep her milk intake high and keep offering different foods. HV suggested that I just keep trying and do it 3 times per day, which I wasn't as didn't see the point, but she said a few tastes 3 times per day is 3 times as much food intake, so I do this now. I try to stay positive whilst feeding, and she is quite happy to try things (and then decide she doesn't want it) but this way at least she doesn't view it as a negative process.

I have tried so many different foods that I've made, finger foods and jars and DD wont eat any of them. My sister gave me a packet of Heinz/Farleys mediteranean vegetabes with rice, and she loved it . This was not what I wanted as was hoping to make all her food myself but she wont eat it . Anyway this is still the only thing she will eat, I've tried mixing things in with it but she knows and wont eat it.

I think that milk is the main source of calories at their age so don't worry too much, try to stay positve you are not alone

Dont worry! Perfectly normal. I would second offering little bits of things. They dont really need much solid food at this stage. Milk is the most important nutrient for them!

My friend's daughter didn't eat properly until she was about 14 months old (I think). It's caused no problems at all.

wotnopulling · 01/07/2008 22:32

i had this problem too and spent weeks trying to persuade dd2 to try solids and i too had success with the farleys/heinz dried savoury range.
she's now ten months old and still has it for every meal. there are two varieties med veg and rice or cauli and broc cheese and another wich is cheese bake but is in slightly different box.
i add milk and baby pasta, rice, cous cous and today, even quinoa (v exciting, it's full of all sorts of good things according to the box) so it has lumps and more carbs/calories. i also try to sneak cheese in (yes) or cream cheese (no) etc.
I keep trying other stuff and have had some small success. she will now eat teeny amounts of toast, oat cakes, weetabix, ella's kitchen purees and sometimes little star yogs or from frais.
It's not good but I try not to stress it and she has made some progress - so my advice is same as everyone's - keep offering it and try to look as though it makes no difference to you whether it's eaten or not.
oh the other thing that works is a certain level of distraction. ie cbeebies or wimbledon - for some reason everytime people clap she'll take a mouthful! Tennis bores me but small price to pay i suppose.
good luck!

Thanks for your support mums. It's good to know it's not just me! I'll persevere, and try these Farleys boxes.

I would totally recommend ellas pouches - you can buy them in tesco - suitable right up to toddler wish I knew about them before!

twinkleymum · 07/07/2008 18:28

penkat, how did you get on with the boxes? My DD doesn't like Ella's pouches unless I disguise a bit of them with lots of baby rice.
