Reluctantly need to start weaning lo off bf as want to ttc no 2 and no af yet. (Have started other threads on this subject - i know some women don't have to stop completely but can't hang around to wait and see...)

As i've always done bfing on demand I'm not sure how to proceed. i need to pre-empt her milk hunger otherwise she'll only take the breast i think. So i think i need to start a routine. what's yours?

Also I know one year olds can go straight onto cow's milk but is a formula better? How much a day should i give?

Grateful for any advice.

PS: dd is blw and diong well on solids.

Teapot, I'm still trying to completely wean dd off feeds at 14m, so I can't be much help but you can def. start on cows milk at 1 yr. I don't really see the point in you giving DD formula if she's having food and dairy. Much better to get her full on good food, rather than introducing yet another form of feed, I think.
Do the weaning bit by bit, dropping the least important feed first...maybe the afternoon one? Try slowly with small cups of cows milk at room temp. Be careful not to drop too many b/feeds at once or you'll be left with sore boobs.
Sorry I can't help with much more, but I'll watch this thread for advice too!

thanks brightongirl. we're at the point where she'll often go all day without a feed anyway, she feeds a lot more at night, but at the mo she seems to be feeding more in the day again, ;perhaps cos teething...

Bet its teething. Try the milk when she's feeling a bit sleepy - maybe when shes in her pushchair. As long as its in between meals and won't take up her appetite for the next one it may work. Is she walking? I found that once Dd was up and running around she drank more milk because she was thirsty.

yes, just walking. also it's so hot, so prob a combination of all those things. seems to be cutting first molar too...

poor bunny.
Just keep persisting with the sippy cup of milk. My DD is still very up and down with milk, but I've been told that as long as they're having sufficient dairy in yoghurt, cereal, cheese etc not to worry too much.

what's scary is i've followed the blw philosophy food is just for fun until they're one which has meant i've been relaxed when she's not been eating loads. feels like i'll have to keep a closer eye on what nutrition she's getting. having said that she does enjoy a wide range of foods just sometimes doesn't eat much.

sounds like you're doing the right thing. I'm constantly told that even when DD hardly eats anything she's still eating enough. They will only eat when hungry and never starve on purpose. So don't worry about that. Much more important she eats wide range foods.

thanks, and good luck with your dd too.
