OK, DH says we should give DS sweet things, I say not

DS is 7.5mo. He's not a great eater and refused all food for a week while teeth were coming in. He's now back to eating but refuses savoury food (bar a few spoons) and will only eat yogurt, bananas and fruit purees.

My feeling is that he's just got a liking for the sweet stuff and that by giving in and giving him fruit/yogurt at every meal we'll end up with a fussy eater. I want to give him a range of savoury foods (some with fruit in) so that he develops broader tastes and if he doesn't eat them, NOT offer him a fruit/sweet alternative (he still has milk, obviously, so he's not in danger of starving).

DH thinks we should offer savoury at every meal and if he doesn't eat it, then offer fruit/yogurt.

DS is only getting unsweetened yogurt and home-made fruit purees. No added sugar and nothing to drink except milk and water.

What do you think? Which approach is right? I'm being non-stressy about mealtimes, BTW, as I figure he's getting enough nutrition from the milk (and all that bloody fruit ), but DH and I thought we'd put it to MN to see which was the best approach to take.

my ds2 was like this,he wouldnt touch anything savoury untill about 10 months when he started eating normal food.of course,i had never heard of BLW back then.i did BLW with dd3 and she pretty much ate anything i put in front of her.

ds2 is almost 5 and not in the slightest bit fussy about food now.

bm and formula are pretty much sweet anyway so he will be used to that.

can't you just feed him food like you have? A savoury meal then fruit and or yoghurt? Offer both? At this age its just about trying new things. Have you tried finger food? Sometimes my son use to dip his sandwich in his yoghurt.

have you tried sweet potato or butternut squash, my dd loved those from an early age and they don't know it's good for them

Sufi · 29/06/2008 20:46

Thanks all.

Have tried finger foods - he'll gum a bit of bread and rice-cakes but won't touch anything else (veggie sticks, cheese). He also doesn't really 'eat' the bread/rice-cakes, just treats them like a toy (as in, stick it in mouth, chew, spit out). He doesn't really 'get' eating yet.

Have also tried sweet veggies (carrot, butternut squash, sweet pot etc.) and he just pulls a face and spits them out!

And also a spoon of savoury, a spoon of sweet (he gets wise to it and then refuses to eat either).

It's more a question of: is it OK for him to just eat sweet things or should I withdraw all sweet things for a while to try and get him to develop a taste for savouries?

My DD would only eat sweet stuff when we first started solids. I got "told off" by a HV who said I had to make her eat savoury stuff.

She is now 15 months old and prefers to eat savoury food! Although she will eat yogurt she's no longer keen on fruit and would rather eat pasta.

I think your DH is right (sorry)

tab1 · 29/06/2008 20:51

I'd go with DH sorry, as long as you offer savoury first and offer variety I would then offer fruit after.

It's OK if DH is right (for once!) We've just been debating it over the kitchen table and thought we'd offer the casting vote to MN. TBH, I'm happier if DS is eating something/anything, I just didn't want to end up with a toddler with tooth-rotting tastes...

thanks all xx
