Fruit juice for 9 month old?

Up to now I've just been giving DS water, but my Health Visitor suggested that I start mixing some fruit juice with the water?

Is that a good idea? DS is eating a variety of fruit anyway, and I'd thought it would be better to just give water as a drink.

TIA

Its not a good idea. All they need to drink is water or milk - fruit juice is very acidic and bad for their teeth. And once they start drinking sweet stuff it can be hard to get them to drink water.

Weeglenny, I agree with you completely, that's what I think with mine.

Water and milk is fine. ds is nearly 14 months and dp keeps asking if we should give him juice, as have others. My view is that he'll probably learn to ask for it at some point but the longer that is the better.

Also, if you do give him anything else as he gets older, keep it to with meals and think about how he drinks it. Stick with water for regular sips between meals. Baby bottle's a very bad idea for drinks with sugar etc in as teat delivers it straight onto front teeth if they have any. Apparently straws are quite good as they direct away from the drink.

Thanks both, that's what I had thought too - I really want to keep him on milk/water for as long as possible...

cmotdibbler - no issue with it being bad for his teeth just yet as he still hasn't got any but I get your point for when he does though

and elkiedee, good suggestion thanks for later on about only offering juice with meals, and water for inbetween, I'll remember that for later on
