Giving DS ricecake so I can sneak proper food in - is this naughty?

DS2 is 7 months and I sometimes have to give him a rice cake to hold so that I can 'sneak' some proper food in his mouth whilst he is trying to put the rice cake in - I have to be quick! He doesn't seem to mind, never gets upset or anything. Is this ok? DO other mums use 'tactics' to get the food in the baby?

By proper food, I presume you mean fruit, veg, meat, etc? If he's putting food like rice cakes to his mouth and eating them, do you think you might try giving him "proper" food in the same way - e.g florets of broccoli, sticks of cooked carrot, etc, and see if he manages to eat them? FWIW, I haven't used tactics to get dd to eat - I weaned her with finger food only, and she self-fed, so the approach is a little different. My personal feeling is that if possible I'd avoid tactics like this, as I think that ideally children develop a good relationship with food by choosing to eat for themselves, and understanding what they're doing.
However - it's easy for me to say this with one child who happens to eat like a horse - I do understand that you're concerned that your child is well nourished. At 7 months you're really just at the beginning of the weaning process, and milk will make up the bulk of his nutrition for a while yet - I wouldn't worry, take it easy, let him see you enjoying food, and share where you can, and see how he goes.

Yes but at 7 months there's no rush for them to be on solids. My ds2 was a big bugger and took no solids until he was 13 months old.
My ds3 was 11 months old before he fancied solids.

I think we force them onto solids too early sometimes because we worry they're not getting enough when they are.

yes it's naughty but i have done it as well. i try not to do it thou as i recently have turned into BLW.

yeah, i've done it too

you can also try giving them a spoon so they can "help" but be prepared with ds well covered up first!

another tactic i used at that age (not often I hasten to add!) was to lace their main course mush with fromage frais! (can you tell i'm not a BLWer!)
