do you mean "normal" wheetabix?

i just bought some for dd 6.5mths to try and then saw it had sugar in it - when people say wheetabix (weetabix?) do they mean the baby stuff?

and do i use cows milk? thanks!

It does have sugar and salt in it but it is only a very small amount and is suitable for babies over 6 months. You can use cows milk over the age of 6 months or continue to use breast or formula if you prefer.

misscathcart · 22/06/2008 13:41

I used normal weetabix with cows or goats milk once dd was this age i think
You could alwasy use bm or formula too

ANTagony · 22/06/2008 13:42

My elder son had the normal wheetabix but I think he was a little older about 9/ 10 months. I stuck with his baby milk so that I wasn't introducing to many things at once. At 6.5months that was a mix of breast feeds and SMA bottles. It seams to change all the time but I think with my younger son now 2 they were saying keep off cows milk and dairy for 12 months

SenoraPostrophe · 22/06/2008 13:43

is there baby weetabix?

I gave it (normal weetabix) to mine from about 9 months (I hesitated at 6 months because of the salt). before that they had ground rice (with milk and sugar) or porridge (with milk and sugar). there's nothing wrong with sugar per se, it's just too much of it that's bad.

Caz10 · 22/06/2008 13:48

SP i only discovered it yesterday! hippabix or something like that...

next (related) question is...as dd is bf and my ebm is like bl00dy golddust (& just as hard to extract!) i'm either going to have to give her cows milk or formula with any type of cereal...which is "better"??

it's fine to give normal milk with food at 6 months.

if you're worried, start by cooking ground rice with it (since rice is easily digested) so that you're only introducing one thing at a time. just use normal ground rice though, that baby rice is like wallpaper paste.

My ds has been having normal weetabix since he was 7 months old with cows milk and either mashed banana, grated apple or grated pear, he loves it!

CaraLondon · 22/06/2008 14:56

bite-sized shredded wheat has less sugar in it, if you're worried about sugar content.

Liz79 · 22/06/2008 16:54

My paediatrician friend says formula is better than cows milk, even cooked. He says cow milk & cheese best avoided until 12m as they can cause gut erosions and something else which sounds nasty. Yogurt ok from 7m cos of gut erosions. Personally I will be pumping like a mad woman!

Liz79 · 22/06/2008 16:55

yogurt ok cos of "good bacteria", sorry.

terramum · 22/06/2008 23:11

Doves farm whole wheat biscuits taste just as good (actually better imo) and have zero sugar & less salt than weetabix.

onepieceoflollipop · 22/06/2008 23:14

We give dd2 Oatibix - imo it is less "abrasive" on her insides that Weetabix and tastes a bit better too.

Caz10 · 23/06/2008 10:09

Great, thanks!

what type of milk do you all use then?

Liz79 eeek I didn't know that. Had just been going by the NHS booklet which just says full fat dairy after 6mths and cows milk for cooking...

Redy brek is better than weetabix. No sugar or salt or any other rubbish .. pure goodness.

And cows milk is fine to mix with food from 6 months as long as its not your LO's main source of milk as it doesn't contain as many nutrients as breast/formula milk.

Liz79 · 23/06/2008 15:05

Yes I was going by the NHS book too. Have decided to play it safe now and hold off as long as possible, doubt I'll make it to 12m though, I'll try.
