When should I start weaning?

I have an almost 4 month old, my hv has said things has changed and weaning must start at 6 months now,
my baby is constantly hungry, he has around 11 oz every 3 hours, he is a very healthy baby but I feel as if formula is not enough to keep him full and satisfied.
I had 2 children before him, my little girl was under dietician and needed be weaned at 17 weeks due to cows milk allergy, my eldest son was weaned at 4 months.
I am just looking for peoples views and if people do still wean their baby at 4 months? Is it right?

I don’t know anyone recently who weaned earlier than 5 months.
Both of mine were very milk hungry, but I only started offering solids once they could sit in a high chair, showed an interest in solids, and could swallow solids properly. For one this was a bit younger than 6 months and for the other it was a bit older.
I don’t believe the advice is ‘6 months on the dot’ - I think it’s ’around’ 6 months. But there are good reasons why they recommend that rather than 4 months.

Hi @Iammumof3xoxthe advice to wean at 6 months has been around quite a while. My eldest is in their early 20s and this was the advice then Smile

Of you think that Like is having too much milk, are they going up through the weight centiles or are they following their curve?

Babies who are FF need roughly 2.5 Floz per pound in weight in a day. So a 16lb baby will need roughly 40 Floz, does that sound about right for your LO?

And if you’re still thinking of
weaning the NHS have this quiz to help you decide if they’re ready.

Babies grow at such a phenomenal rate in the first 6 months of life and if you do wean, you can only really give fruit or vegetables before 6 months so adding in solids is effectively putting them on a diet.

Totally up to you though, absolutely no judgement here Smile

It's been recommended to wait til 6 months for ages, that's not a recent change. They need to be developmentally ready and most aren't before 6 months. Especially as it's much better to offer solid food, not puree or baby rice, and they need to be ready for that.

My oldest is 14 and 6 months was the advice then. As far as I remember he was fine waiting until then. I did wean DD at just over 5 months, as I figured she was ready when she stole some of my cake (weaned on more appropriate first foods than cake). Babies eat so little and milk actually has more calories than the foods they can have before 6 months.

The advice to wean at 6 months is given for a reason, just do some basic research. If baby is 'super hungry' as you same give more milk!

TappingTed · 06/05/2026 14:57

Yeah as others have said- milk is actually more calorific than the initial foods eaten by a Baby so truly hungry babies just need more milk or less space between feeds.
