Seven-month-old struggling to drink water during weaning and constipation

Please help! Baby is 7 months old EBF. He’s started purées and some BLW but he’s so constipated. Been to the doctors who prescribed lactulose but keep encouraging us to give him water which we have been. We’ve tried different styles of cup, colder water, boiled the cooled water etc but he just can’t seem to get the hang of drinking. He sucks it up then spits it out. But he does seem thirsty. We’re at a loss of what else to try and unless we can sort this I’m not sure the constipation will resolve. Any advice?

You could try a straw. My granddaughter at this age could manage well with a straw. You might need to find plastic ones because paper ones will get squished

Have you tried a straw cup? My dd learnt to use one when we dipped the straw in yoghurt.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 10/04/2026 14:24

Warm water in a bottle.
Babies hate cold water.

Is he still getting sufficient breast feeds? Maybe he just isn't getting the hang of the completely different technique of managing a cup?
His milk is still the most important source of nourishment until he is 12 months. Breast milk changes according to the age and stage of the baby.
Remember that food is for fun until they are one.

Yes still feeding on demand. GP advised he does need water now he’s started weaning as it helps the digestive system. I will try a straw cup as others have said.

Homestly, if this was me I’d try and introduce an extra BF during the day. At 7 months if he’s thirsty he needs a BF. How often is he feeding during the day now?

Sorry but that's nonsense from your GP. Just offer more breastfeeds. Mine barely drank water at that age (we did offer). They don't need water, they are getting hydrated from milk which is their primary source of calories. And offer fibre rich foods like chia seeds soaked with oats, peas, prunes etc.

How are you both getting on now @BrightRosePanda? Smile
