So what's BLW about and where can I find out more?

My 8mo DD is good with finger foods and rubbish with lumpy purees (she's not that impressed with smooth purees either!). I've heard a bit about BLW but want to find out more. What's the idea behind it and where can I find out more?

ah you need Aitch's blog

MrsBadger · 19/06/2008 09:01

(though tbh BLW is really about introducing food via finger-foods-only - you're way past that stage so I'd just call it 'finger food')

Just give dd lumpy food then! I took the BLW approach with ds right from day 1 and he's never had a puree in his life. (Mrs Badger's right about Aitch's blog - v helpful) He's 11mo now and eats anything (except green food) with his hands. He's having a go at using a spoon, but not very effectively. He's always loved roast dinners, scrambled egg, sandwiches, sausages and fishfingers in particular. Currently his favourite is small food, like Cheerios, peas (despite being green), raisins, blueberries etc.

Just go for it. DD won't choke. They have an amazing capacity to go bright red and then cough it out across the room. The principle behind BLW is that a child won't choke because they won't have the ability to feed themselves with their fingers, until they have the ability to swallow solid food.

Thanks. I'll check out the blog. So, if DD is 8mo and has been having purees (as well as finger foods) does that mean it's too late for BLW?

er, yeah
cos weaning is introducing non-milk foods

you've already introduced food

hence are no longer weaning

(is the way I see it, tis a bit of a semantic argument)

nothing to stop you offering finger food only from now on though and calling it whatever you like

Well, it's going well. Gave her only finger foods last night and she loved it. Think I'm going to bypass the lumpy puree stage and just go straight for finger foods
