DS GAGS AND THEN VOMITS WHEN GIVEN LUMPY FOOD. NORMAL????

Ds has been weaning now for about 8 weeks, started on fruit purees at about 24 wks and is now doing quite well despite being quite a fussy, up and down eater. It has always been a battle to get him to take his milk to be honest so it's nice to have something else to offer him.
In a typical day he now has
breakfast - Muller little stars fromage frais
Lunch - carrot and apple puree and banana custardfor desert
Tea - Chicken with rice and veg puree and some kind of desert like the rest of banana custard etc
Plus 20oz milk.
He doesn't always have exactly that but he always has some meat at tea time, veg puree at lunch and something yogurt/cereal/baby rice like at breakfast.
Anyway, sorry am babbling on, the problem is, I keep trying him with slightly lumpy food occasionally but even though he takes it he alway gags as soon as he realises it is lumpy and then he wretches and vomits a bit, not a lot but usually just some of the milk feed he's had just before.
This happens everytime I try the lumpy food, I would say it's happened about 4 times now. I'm just worried as to whether this is just something all babies do when first trying lumpy food or whether they don't and he's going to have a problem switching to more lumpy food?
The other problem I have is that he has very slow weight gain which we are waiting to see the paed about but I the hv suggested to 'keep persisting' with the lumpy food but the problem I have with that is that I don't want him to keep vomiting his milk up cause it's hard enough to get it in to him in the first place.
Anyway, any advice on any of this would be gratefully received

Rather than do lumpy puree have you tried giving finger foods alongside the puree and see if he gets on better? We sort of by-passed lumpy puree and went from smooth stuff to finger foods instead.

ds3 never coped with lumpy- went from slush to proper solid.

hmm, yes, well if I give him a biscotti to chew on he kind of gums it and eats the lumps but thats the only finger food i've managed to get him to eat. have tried giving him pieces of banana, carrot and slices of toast with cream chese/butter on. The banana got very slightly nibbled then went on the floor, the toast with cream cheese on ws hardly touched and he did bite a chunk off the toast with butter on but then gagged and vomited. He did manage to bite a lump off the carrot and swallow it then chucked it on the floor. So, semi success with finger foods, maybe should keep trying them. Got any good suggestions to try?

Finger food. try the lumps on their own, he might surprise you...

soft things cut into sticks like sweet potato or butternut squash roasted well, baby crips from organix, soft banana or really ripe pear

First baby did the gagging thing but by baby 3 and the 'baby led weaning' approach, he manages lumpy thing wonderfully with very few gagging incidents...

Have you seen Aitch's blog on BLW - loads and loads of suggestions on there...

Oh and forgot to mention, dh gave him a little mushy lump of banana today just off his finger and he took one piece fine but then the next piece made him gag and vom again.

I think some babies take longer to get used to lumps.

DD1 would gag when given lumpy food until she was about 11mths. DD2 (9MTHS) would and does eat lumps right from the start and has never gagged or been sick while eating.

Not sure if that any help, only take it a your babies pace.

AitchNunsnet · 18/06/2008 21:17

some babies just have more sensitive gag reflexes, dalrymps... sounds like you've got one of 'em. the gag reflex (actually a rather marvy safety device) moves back over time, and with more exposure to food etc. (that's why finger food can be helpful).

some adult women (and men, let's not be sexist) find that their jobs require them to train their gag reflex to go far faaaaaaar back... i'll leave you to guess which.

thanks for the reassurance lizziemun I think it will just take him a while.
aitchnunsnet - I think I have got one of em! So, I suppose it's just gonna be a case of getting him used to it over time, hope he does get used to it, i've been freaked out by the program 'my child won't eat' the other night, there was a liitle boy on there that looked a little like ds and wouldn't eat lumps!
Oh and I think I get what job you mean there
