Someone tell me this is just teething and won't last for ever...

OK so my battles to get DD to eat are well documented on Mumsnet, and you're probably all bored to tears with me - but I could just do with hearing some of your experiences by way of reassurance.

I'd felt we were getting somewhere with DD as apart from the occasional off-feed/day she's been doing much better. Drinking plenty of milk and eating a fair amount of solids, generally.

However the last couple of weeks have been a return to the bad old days... refusing to take much in the way of bottle and practically no solids. Things reached another head today when she refused breakfast, mid morning bottle AND lunch having only taken 3 oz when she woke up.

Left me feeling pretty down again, tbh.

I've just managed to get 8oz into her as she was falling asleep for a nap, so feeling a bit better, but still, that's no way to carry on and she's still had no solids.

I KNOW she's teething - she's drooling such a lot I have to change her bib every hour or so as it's soaked through. She also has this stuffy/runny nose thing, which means I have to keep trying to wipe the snot away when trying to feed her as it keeps getting in her mouth. Still no sign of any ACTUAL teeth though...

So she's just not interested because she's teething, right?

And everyone goes through this and it's completely normal, right?

And I'm NOT back to square one with her, right?

Calpol/gel/powders etc. seem to help not a jot.

Just sooooooo fed up...

My ds is the same. Rarely eats when teething- just screams. He will munch a bit of bread and suck cucumber for a bit, then loses it. Won't drink from bottle, only wants breastmilk.

Your dd sounds completely normal to me!

I saw in a book the other day that teething takes 3 days- one before the tooth, one as the tooth cuts through, and one as it pushes fully out. Ha ha ha ha ha ha! What a load of crap- my DS has had a total of 25,347,372,378,638 days teething (approximately) and only 4 have actually come through.

DB - feel for you - am going thru exact same thing with DS2 - nightmare isn't it. Have you tried calprufen (sp?) it's a baby ibuprofen - may help a bit more with the pain.

yep had exactly the same thing at this age. in the end we started to have a series of a few good days and then bad ones.

when it was bad we went for max pain releif and had to keep it up for a few days and this then made a bit of a difference.

i found that ds's gums were less sore when asleep at nigh so fed him a lot then and also just on waking or while dozing off any other time and he found it to painful really.

i found that if i got him to stay calm and distracted him a bit that he would sometimes take a bit more bottle. i never tried to force it as it just made him more distressed.

Have you tried giving your DD finger food straight from the fridge so it's nice and cold on her gums?

My DS is also teething at the moment (though no sign of any actual teeth!) and he loves slices of nice cold melon, and likes slices of mango as well.

Well our little girl has been a battle since April..and has hardly gained weight. in april she was sick with an ear infection - lots heaps of weight as it lasted a few weeks - antibiotics gave her diarrhea and made her sick. We also had teething on top of it.

I have also read teething takes 3 days..but for us we normally have a month or so of teething pain. Her first two teeth came through in march and all of feb she was funny with teething troubles.

She has just been in hospital due to not putting on weight and refusing food and drink. She had loads of tests done as she is also behind developmentally but all ok. She came out today but is still refusing food and bottle. Just screams and turns head away as soon as bottle goes in mouth and the doctors in hospital have ruled out just about EVERYTHING. So I am putting it down to her next 4 teeth as they should be through soon. It is a long drawn out process..I would love it if teething REALLY DID last 3 days..
