can you use stock cubes in baby puree?

I made up some food for dd yesterday and used a stock cube for the vegetable stock. I then read that you shouldn't use them because of the salt content but have worked out that there is only 0.4g in a serving. So the question is can i use the food i made or do i need to chuck it and start again?

I'd avoid using stock but I wouldn't throw away what you've already made. Just avoid in future.

That is quite a lot.

It's a hassle but if you need to use stock in the future it's best to make your own. Just chuck loads of veg in a pot and boil the hell out of it.

link here shows daily recommended salt limits. Considering there is salt to some level in all things, milk, etc, 0.4g is a lot of the daily limit in one go.

Truuuly scrumptious organic baby food sell a no salt stock - pricey though.

Marigold also does a vegan low salt version which is good.

Generally I would avoid using ready-made stock for a baby but also there is no point in wasting what you have already made, so yes I would use it!

thanks very much everyone, will definitely get the low salt options in future. Just didn't even think about it until i was feeding her last night and had a small panic.

How old is she. She will already be getting salt in milk and from the other ingredients. this is the salt guidelines for babies and children. Personally I wouldn't use it unless she is over 1 and the rest of her diet is low salt (even breakfast cereals can have about 0.5g).

is that 0.4g per baby sized portion? if so, I think that's quite high.

Lile LL said, use it this time, but try a low salt option in future. We either used kallo lo-salt (you can get them in sainsburys), or sachets of baby gravy or esle I made my own salt free stock.

she is 6 months but only has breakfast (half a weetabix and dinner (which usually has no salt because i make it all. These were the first recipes i had made where it was more than one veg being boiled up.

Steaming veg is healthier and you can use the water as stock or stock base.

you just do not need stock at all, the baby isn't going 'nice, but it needs salt', it's going 'oooooh, what's this orange stuff?' tbh it's crackers to put stock in, imo.

No, make your own stock, it's really easy and any left over can be frozen into ice cube portions.

If you steam your veg just reserve the liquid, or boil up some veg with 1 litre of water and strain. I always did the first option as it didn't involve extra faff for me.

You really shouldn't be giving any salt at this age, not only for the kidney aspect but also for the fact you'll be developing a taste for salty food, which is not good for future health.
