I am interested in the sound of BLW but my DS is bottle fed - will this make a difference?

Have had a read through some of the back threads on here and all the ones I have found about BLW mention BF as well.

DS is bottle fed - can I still do BLW with him? (when he is ready, not yet am thinking ahead!)

Won't make an ounce of difference - see here www.babyledweaning.com for Aitchs blog and theres tons of support on the forums.

Enjoy !!

no difference whatsoever!

SmugColditz · 17/06/2008 21:26

I did it, it was fine, he loved it. Principle is the same.

Sunshinemummy · 17/06/2008 21:27

No problems here with bottle fed DS - he took to it really quickly and it was great fun.

actually, Gill Rapley came onto my blog to say that as far as she was concerned it shouldn't make a difference either. it's in the breast and bottle-feeding section of the site, along with a leeeetle rant from me about my shiteyness at bfing. dd, despite being ff, took to blw really well.

2point4kids · 17/06/2008 21:34

Oh fab, thanks!

I couldnt think why it would be the case, but I was convinced that it wouldnt work with bottle fed babies.

I am looking forward to giving it a go!

i think it's because if you're rigidly routining your baby then it's not possible to demand feed with milk, which tbh you really do need to do with blw. however, we always fed dd as and when, more or less, so it was no sort of issue.

StealthPolarBear · 17/06/2008 21:39

She also said that because her study had been done on bf babies she couldn't extend the results to all babies iirc Aitch? As in, it wouldn't be good practice for her to do so.

AitchTwoCiao · 17/06/2008 21:46

oh yes, that's what GR said. routine thing would be my practical objection.

2point4kids · 17/06/2008 22:49

Oh yes, I can understand that routine would be an issue.
Luckily I am pretty much doing everything on demand with feeding and sleeping even though I am bottle feeding, so should be ok.
Just need to keep it up for the next few weeks now until he hits 6 months

Hmm - obv. I did it wrong as I carried on with my feeding routine as well as doing BLW and didn't find any issues at all!

AitchTwoCiao · 18/06/2008 11:54

so presumably your routine met all his needs then? i didn't say wrong, did i? it's a practical challenge, though, for some babies.

Sunshinemummy · 18/06/2008 16:19

I guess it did. I carried on with routine as normal and BLWd on top until I thought he was getting sufficient food for me to start dropping milk feeds. It worked really well for us and was very very easy.
