Want to try giving my 6mo toast fingers. What can I put on them - butter or spread?

Does it have to be unsalted butter? Are the soft spreads such as flora or whatever safe if thats all thats in the fridge?

Mmmm, cream cheese and marmite together - thats one of my favs!

To be honest I just use the ordinary butter spread that we have and always have done with DD.

Thanks

Oooh, no marmite for under 1's! I personalyl wouldn't use spread as it's usually full of additives. Butter is fine (yes, use unsalted) but Philadelphia is great - the full-fat stuff, obviously I think we're keeping Philly in business at the moment! Mashed avocado mixed with Philly is good, too.

Brangelina · 17/06/2008 11:49

Marmite is OK if you use the low salt version and only a smear. We use Natex low salt which can be found in any health food shop.

Don't use spread as it's full of dodgy ingredients, as is (IIRC) Philadelphia. When they're tiny the simpler the better, so just butter, marmite, maybe melt some cheese. Mushroom paté was a great favourite in this house - fry mushrooms with onion and parsely (we also added white wine!), then blend with a tin of cannellini or butter beans. IMO avocado is nicer on untoasted bread as it makes toast go soggy but that's just my taste.

Tinkjon · 17/06/2008 13:38

Philly is full of rubbish?! Really?! I looked on the packet and couldn't see anything dodgy - now you've got me worried, as we get through tons of the stuff! I will have to go and check again now!

Good point about Natex, I'd forgotten that - used to give it to DD all the time when she was tiny! It's only regular Marmite I was warning against.

Just checked the Philadelphia website and there are only 2 added ingredients in the version we buy (full-far Original). One is a natural ingredient from kernels of the carob tree - the other I'm not so sure about. It seems to be a natural product too - a thingummy extracted from seaweed, but there is apparently research into its safety Though of course that doesn't mean that it's unsafe, just that studies are being done.

I'm at this - I've been relying so much on that!!!

Mashed avocado.

I just remember flavoured Philly from a few years ago having artificial aromas in and it tasted quite plasticky (although that could have been the clingfilm my friend used to the sandwiches). TBH I've never bought the original Philly as I'm not keen on the taste, and consequently never read the ingredients list, so I stand corrected. I'd made my assumptions based on the flavoured one. I think it may also have been light, which may have compounded the problem.

Agree nothing wrong with seaweed, DD loves the stuff, though I wince a bit at the salt.

Ooo, hadn't seen these last posts, thanks guys. Mushroom pate sounds really nice, I think I'll be making that. Tried some toast with philly, dd was very keen but don't think she managed to get much in her mouth - mostly just around her mouth, on the highchair, on the floor and in the dogs mouths!
