I gave my baby raw bagged spinach

Please help. I’m bedside myself.

I came back from a rushed and rainy food shop, grabbed the bag of spinach and blended it and mixed with baby’s milk and fed him.

After I re read the information on NHS website and it stated it must be cooked. Then I remembered it was bagged and its high risk of contamination of listeria etc.

Now I’m worried I’ve given him poisoning. He had a dirty nappy about 2 hours after work the contents of yesterdays (carrots) and today’s food. I’m hoping the fibre has upset his stomach but I’m paranoid I’ve done a really bad thing. Any advice?!

Your child will be fine, don't worry. However when your health visitor said to mix things with the baby's milk, I think she meant milky things as he isn't allow cows milk yet - like porridge, baby rice, cereal, mashed potato etc. Not mix everything with baby milk!

Yes looking back I think that was the advice. As you can see from this thread I’ve learnt my lesson 🤣 no more random veg and baby milk ✅ look up weaning recipes online is on my to do list!

I have just watched my toddler eat two frozen peas that I dropped on the floor.

kids are very robust even the little ones. Be kind to yourself op. As others have said the risks are very low xx

Is it not E coli thats associated with raw spinach?
They can have most things at 6 months even if they have no teeth as their gums are hard.

Lightsandrainbows · 24/01/2026 21:30

If no one’s mentioned it already have a look at solid starts. It’s got some good advice on baby led weaning (if you want to do that) and how to prepare different foods.

I was told to mix milk with everything too op. Blend it with a drop of milk instead of water was the advice. As others say though, bit gross.

dementedpixie · 24/01/2026 21:39

Surely you only add milk if something is too thick and needs thinning down?

Makes it no better whichever one it is 🤣 I did buy the pre washed one which I know goes through a sanitising process. Makes me feel no better though

Did the bag say whether it was ready to eat?

shellyleppard · 24/01/2026 21:49

@C17GLD i used to give my sons what we ate just watched the salt content. They are now 20 and 17 and eat me out of house and home!!! I used a recipe book by Annabel karmel too, it has some lovely recipes in x

My daughter, once crawling was obsessed with licking the wheels of the pushchair or the bottom of shoes, eating sand out of the sand pit and once popped a whole slug in her mouth I had to fish out. Amazingly she was an incredibly healthy toddler. Whatever tiny risk there is I'm sure they are fine- my relative with leukemia eats plenty of raw spinach and has never been ill from it, despite being more vulnerable than most.

It will be absolutely fine. But don’t mix food with milk.

Spinach zapped with an egg, tiny bit cheese, pop in oven. Little omelette quiche bites.

milk is milk.

That’s actually not the advice these days

OP is right lots of current advice is to puree veg with a bit of babies milk (formula or breastmilk). It’s in lots of baby cook books eg Wean in 15 by Joe Wicks. I did it with all 3 of my babies

I was so excited to get to starting solids as I loved it with my first two. Now I’m more grown and sensible I see all the dangers so not as fun!

Thank you for the ideas - and hearing your story I’m glad I’m not the only one who is freaking out over this weaning stuff! A lot of advice and a lot to take in I find - slow and steady. And no more spinach and milk 🤣

How old is baby? If it’s the beginning of weaning journey then random veg blended with milk is great! It’s what they recommend now, NOT baby rice. It’s to get the used to veg and bitter flavours.

i am weaning baby 3 and they’ve had blended mushroom and milk, blended broccoli and milk, carrot and parsnips, potato and milk

You fed a baby milk and spinach? For God's sake why? Is that what you often eat?

On a more serious note, I often fed mine frozen peas, sweetcorn, beans etc and never had a problem. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Why sooo horrible?

But i guess you cooked the veg before blending it? OP didnt
At 6 months there is less need to blend and you can give finger foods too

JustPaintOverIt · 24/01/2026 22:14

It’s such a weird thing to feed him but he won’t get sick from it

Spinnergou · 24/01/2026 22:27

If you're concerned re health, make sure you're getting organic spinach. Spinach is like number five of the dirty dozen of high pesticide residues, which are obviously worse for babies cos of their body size x
