A question for BLW people in the know

I have a 14 week old baby who sits on my lap when I eat. He has recently discovered grabbing veg off my plate and ramming it in his mouth. Its things like peas, sweetcorn carrot, cabbage. Because of his age I have been removing it from his mouth straight away. but am unsure whether the point of the whole baby led weaning thing which we had planned to follow in a few more weeks, was that they did this kind of thing when they are ready. He is still very young although he was a full 2 weeks overdue. He is not quite sitting up and fully breastfed at the mo.

I weaned his sister with purees at 4 months but don't really want to go down that route again.

Not sure whether to remove him from the table when we eat or to continue to let in ramming stuff in and fishing it out or to not worry about him swallowing it if he does.

I know absolutely NOTHING, just thinking about introducing a bit of baby rice for my PFB at 23 weeks, but I would say this: to everyone who insists to me that she is clearly "ready" for solids, as she is "showing an interest" in my food, I point out that she grabs ANYTHING I am holding and shoves it in her gob. Am I to feed her electronic goods, as she is particularly fond of slobbering on the TV remote control? ! Hope you find a sensible answer soon.

intersting, the concept of BLW is that if a baby is sitting alone, can hold their head well and can get food to their mouth, chew and swallow, and taht they have lost their tongue thrust reflex, they are probably ready for food

BUT as there is an indication that introduction of food before at least 17 weeks is potentially an issue, i would remove the food from him ,

i would remove him to a highchair or something else for now whilst you eat

it is very , very early and actually unecessary for him to have food.. his tummy is still small and milk is all he needs, food could potentially be damaging to him

I tried spoons, blocks and other toys for my DS2 at his stage. When those failed he had to sit on the floor while we ate until I could put him in a highchair (I had a little clippy one for he table which was ok for a littlely). And yes, he did yell when he was on the floor/in bumbo/in bouncy chair but a couple of weeks yelling is better than damaging the gut!

At 14 weeks his gut is simply not mature enough for other food. I think you're doing the right thing fishing the stuff out.

if you want him to start enjoying family meal times, why not offer him a cup with expressed bm? (alright, not the full cup, but just one oz. so he gets the feeling and learns a new skill).

DartmoorMama · 14/06/2008 16:18

that's a good idea the expressed bm in a cup-he is quite a strong boy so think he could manage a little cup. think I will have to sort out his highchair as its got stuck in a laid back position which he hates. I will keep fishing the food out for now if he gets any in and see where we are in a few weeks - i do agree its far too early its just hard to read behaviour sometimes and it takes a second and he's pinched a handful off my plate.
