I wouldn't. It is def dodgy to reheat.

BuntyCupcake · 11/06/2008 09:26

It is safe to reheat (or eat cold) so long as you cooled it quickly and didn't let it hang around warm or at room temp.

wingandprayer · 11/06/2008 09:26

Is safe to reheat rice providing you get it to 70 degrees. Do not risk it if you cannot be sure - nasty bugs lurk within partially heated rice

BuntyCupcake · 11/06/2008 09:32

the temperature to which you reheat isn't relevant - proper guidance here

Brangelina · 11/06/2008 09:32

Well, I didn't know it wasn't safe and used to reheat it regularly to give to my DD. She seems to have survived the experience, as did both I and DP in many years of using up leftover rice for stir fries.

I think it depends on how you stored it (in or out of fridge) and how well you're going to reheat it. I used to fry it up with egg or veg so it used to get quite hot.

I also freeze and reheat lots of rice dishes and have never had any problems. Like the others said, just make sure it's piping hot.

My mistake then sorry. I genuinely thought that reheating the rice kills off the bacteria, clearly not. Thanks for that Bunty - is has been a v long time since I last attended food hygiene lessons!!

BuntyCupcake · 11/06/2008 10:14

It does kill off the bacteria, but the problem isn't the bacteria themselves, it's the toxins they might have produced while they were sitting around at room temperature. Did you read the link?

We eat rice at least every other day. We often keep leftovers for days in the fridge and just reheat to a warm temperature (as we would do for any other food) in the microwave when we are ready to consume it.

I can't ever say I or anyone in my family has got a bad tummy from it.

I know there are special guidelines with regards to rice. Prior to coming to England 10 years ago, I spent my life born and bred in a very warm climate with rice as its staple. But I only found out about these special rice guidelines when I came to England.

I don't think there is the same concern about re-heating rice in countries where rice is the staple. And cannot ever point to any family member or friend or even person who got food poisoning from rice. Maybe I just have a strong stomach ...

blueshoes · 11/06/2008 10:19

BTW, don't listen to me. We sail very close the wind in terms of food expiry dates and cutting off mouldy bits and such in my household. It hasn't killed my family and I suspect it has made us stronger.

Brangelina · 11/06/2008 10:31

Me too Blueshoes, we adopt the rule of if it smells funny don't use it, if it doesn't it's OK. None of us have ever been ill. Also I grew up in the far east where eating leftover rice was commonplace, now I'm in Italy leftover risotto is also a common staple....

blueshoes · 11/06/2008 10:36

I do your sniff test too, Brangelina . I can hand on heart say that we hardly ever throw out any food in our house. We always try to find a home for it before it goes seriously bad.

LookingForwardToSummer · 11/06/2008 12:06

I don't take much notice of use by dates, mould etc but reheating rice is the one thing I don't do. Our dogs and hens love the left overs! I try not to cook to much in the first place but rarely manage it!

helips · 11/06/2008 13:26

Thanks everyone! However, I decided to play it safe and gave ds pasta instead!! I have re-heated rice for me and dh before and we've been fine but just feel a bit unsure whether or not to give to ds. Personally I have a stomach of iron and have no problem in cutting mould off cheese and doing the sniff test but would feel terrible if I gave the little one food poisoning!

we always reheat rice the next day after getting takeaways but wouldn't give it to the baby. i cook him rice dishes like risotto then cool freeze and reheat them though

Twinklemegan · 13/06/2008 22:58

It's perfectly safe to reheat pretty much anything once, as long as you let it cook at a piping hot temperature for a good few minutes. I had no idea this was different with rice. I regularly freeze and reheat rice for DS and we have never had any problems (touch wood).
