DS is 28 weeks and we have been doing blw for a week or so and have a few questions. Everything seems to be coming out of him in more or less the same state (and colour) it went in, is this normal or does it mean his belly isnt ready for it yet? He also doesnt sit very well atall even when supported. He does have 2 teeth and seems to have the hand eye thing down and is feeding himself very well. Am i just worrying over nothing?

That sounds quite normal to me. Maybe Aich has something on it in her BLW blog.

This is normal imo.

By 28 weeks his stomach will have 'closed' so it won't harm him to eat.
However, if you don't feel he wants it just yet, that's fine.
Food until one is just for fun, so it doesn't really matter whether he eats it or not, if it's coming out the same as it went in it's probably a combination of not really chewing and it not getting as mushed up as our food does because there is less variety and his main diet is still milk.
Aitchs blog is here

there have been some good debates about this on the blog forum, actually. it's perfectly normal, i can assure you.

the debates centre around the fact that pureeing gives the food a larger surface area from which to digest nutrients, so you might think that would be better. otoh, it is the act of chewing rather than swallowing that releases salivary amylase and other digestive enzymes, which of course then break down the food.

by and large we've looked at the ruddy good health of our babies and figured that it's swings and roundabouts. but no, it doesn't appear to be anything to do with readiness. if you swallowed a big bit of carrot it'd be much the same, i imagine. and in a few weeks your baby's chewing will get more expert, so no worries.

I think you don't notice it in babies given purees as it just gets lost in the poo, but much the same thing happens - after all, their body has to suddenly sort out making all the enzymes and acids that digest food so its unlikely that its an instant thing.

Now theres an interesting project for someone - analysing the digestion of food in 6 month olds. A whole lot of poo!

Manictigger · 10/06/2008 12:56

My 21 mo still produces poo with distinct food pieces in it (things like sweetcorn and grape skins) so I think it's a combination of food which is too small to chew and things which the body just can't digest. But at least it's a sign that your child is getting fibre.

I'm sure adult poo is the same, we just don't study it that closely
