6 mo ravenous at night

My six month old has been weaning for about three weeks, coinciding with going into her own room. She's taken to sleeping alone pretty well, waking usually no more than two or three times a night. She has formula at night (BF during the day) but her appetite is HUGE. For a night feed 210 ml is normal and sometimes not enough - she'll sometimes need a top-up within half an hour, and is soon wet through. She can easily demolish three of these big bottles a night. I know there's a lot going on at this age - sleep training, weaning, developmental leap - but is this three bottle a night appetite normal? It seems so extreme.

How much solids is she having in the day? Could it be that she’s filling up on solids, which are unlikely to provide enough calories, then she’s making up the lost calories at night?

There is a growth spurt at 6 months though so it ciukd just as easily be that Smile

Is she still having lots of milk in the day? At six months, most of the their calories still need to come from milk so maybe you could add in a couple of extra feeds during the day? Xx

I do agree that trying a couple of extra feeds in the day might help. So if you’re currently BFing every 3 hours you could try offering after 2.5? Have you tried a few breast Conpressions too? Although at this age my DD used to compress them herself…Grin

How are things now @BarchesterTowels?

PersephoneParlormaid · 01/12/2025 07:57

I’d give supper instead

Ohthatsabitshit · 01/12/2025 07:59

Is she thirsty?

Thanks all. Sure enough I tried offering more frequent feeds during the day and another bottle of formula about an hour before bed, and it worked like a dream. The number of night feeds went down straight away, and stopped being such dramatic volumes.

That is really good news. I’m all for getting as many calories into them as you can in the day if it means they sleep at night Smile
