Help - I have a baby gannet! Am I feeding him too much?

We've been weaning for a little while now, using a mixture of purees and finger foods. As far as finger foods go, DS will only pick up and eat banana, preferably when it's mine. Other foods are interesting as playthings, and fun to throw on the floor. Purees, on the other hand, are greeted with broad grins, squeals and leg-waggling excitement. He prefers the purees to be thick and coarse, I think he likes something to chomp on. Now, the thing is, I'm absolutely staggered by the amount he's putting away. I usually give him home-made purees but today we were supposed to be trying out the commercial stuff in preparation for going on holiday. So this is what he ate:

6:30 am breast feed

9:00 am Breast feed followed by 1 weetabix with formula milk (tried cow's milk yesterday and it upset his tummy a bit, I think, so we're shelving that one for a few weeks). Devoured with enthusiasm.

12:30 pm breast feed followed ella's kitchen sachet (120g), thickened with baby rice because he wasn't to keen on it being runny.

3:00 pm Breast feed

5:30 pm Breast feed followed by about 1/3 small hipp jar, greeted by comedy "disgusted" face (he did eat it for a while before clamming up totally). I gave up on that one and made up some banana porridge with 90 ml formula instead. When I put the bowl down he cried for more, so I made up a bit more with just boiled water, and he polished that off too.

in about 30 min he'll have approx 100ml formula, then at about 11pm he'll have a breastfeed.

He's only 6 months old. It seems like such a lot of food, given that I'm BFing before every meal and at every other opportunity as well. HV said he would regulate his intake himself and to just feed him as much as he wants, but I'm a bit concerned. I haven't had him weighed lately, but from being a 25th centile baby he's now heading towards the 75th. He's on the 75th for height as well, and he really doesn't look at all fat to me - but you can have a look on my profile and judge for yourselves if you like.

Please can you tell me honestly if you think it's too much, and what I should do about it if it is?

No way does that boy look fat (5months pic)
He looks adooooooooooooooooooooooorable.
Could you not manage real food on holiday? So much nicer than sachets imo.

FWIW When the books said my PFB should be having 2 ice cubes of food he was having 8! He is 7 now and not an ounce of fat on him anywhere.

thanks NAB, he is pretty lovely . I've put a 6 month pic on there now too, taken 3 days ago, should give you a better idea.

dont worry go with the flow, le thim eat what he needs,FWIW my son eats even more !! remember tey ned lots of food for growth and energy levels , they burn it up quickly...at 6 months my son was having a main savoury meal[approx 5 ice cubes size] followed by pudding..yog and fruit puree plus bits of fruit and that was after a mid morning milk..and then he would drink an 8 oz bottle at 2 pm only to repeat a two course dinner at 5pm then a 8 oz bottle a bed

NotABanana · 06/06/2008 20:02

Nope. Still not fat.
Still gorrrrrrrrrrrgeous.

It's perfectly normal, Sanguine. I remember ds eating like a pig at six months .. he couldn't get enough.

It'll drop off, especially when he starts walking.

Thanks everyone - just a bit freaked by the annabel karmel book that says I might need to start using 2 ice cubes worth when he's six months... I freeze purees in pots containing about 90 ml each and he'll happily have 1.5 - 2 of them at a sitting! Even at the very beginning he'd polish off a great bowl of baby rice when I was only expecting him to eat a couple of spoons full.

Hi
Your baby is lovely. My son was quite chubby as a baby, he used to eat a lot. My health visitor wasn't concerned, but my relations kept commenting. Now, he's a tall, skinny 16 year old. His younger brother is the same. I wouldn't worry too much.
