Weaning causing discomfort at night

Hello everyone,

We starting weaning our 6 month old daughter with puréed veg about two weeks ago. Ever since she has woken multiple times during the night in pain and discomfort caused by wind. She seems to be really enjoying her food, and would keep eating more than the recommended amount if I gave it.

Before this she was in a routine of sleeping throughout the night with maybe one or two stirs/wake ups since about 4 months. However
For the first 14 weeks she was terribly colicky with many sleepless nights and long days, looking back I now think there is a good chance it was due to silent reflux but thankfully around 14 weeks she woke up one morning like a different baby and was comfortable.

We have given her some carrots, avocado and sweet potatoes in the morning. We did start on baby rice for the first couple of days which didn't seem to give much issue.

Anyone go through similar with their lo? Any suggestions would be so welcomed! Thanks

Is there a reason you’re not doing BLW? If she’s only eating veg that will be quite high fibre so that could be causing her the discomfort. I would try and vary the diet a little bit more rather than just pureed veg x

Thanks so much for your reply!

No real reason for not trying BLW other than I found the information available confusing and I can't seem to get my head around how/where to start. Purée just seemed easier to begin with.

no reason for just veg, it's what we were having for dinner. I read it's best to keep it to one food at a time for a couple of days at the start before moving on to the next but I had planned to introduce pears and bananas next. Hopefully this will help x

BLW isn't mandatory.

It could be that she's adjusting to solids and it'll settle down. I do remember my son being a bit like this but can't remember how long it went on for. Sounds like she's enjoying her food though. X

My little one was like this and looking back I think it was just her tummy getting used to food. Tbh it did last about 6 months and I did stick to one food at a time and only introduced one new food at a time. She did have a dairy allergy which she grew out of and still can’t tolerate gluten but everything else she is ok with now she is 20 months . I think it does just take some baby’s time for their tummy to get used to food .
i didn’t do BLW as didn’t know where to begin with it tbh

I don't understand what people mean about not knowing where to begin with baby led weaning. Literally just cut some of what you're having into strips and give it to the baby. Baby will play with it, smell it, lick it, suck it, often times drop it on the floor. Eventually some of it will start going in!

I mean BLW isn't compulsory, but it certainly isn't complicated. I guess if you are eating exclusively liquids or UPFs it might be harder to know what to feed the kid, but for most people who are eating normally what's on your plate is good enough, and for most babies of six months-a year milk/formula will still be where they get most of their calories so it's not like you have to worry about how much they actually get down them. Just give it to them and let them go!
