I really want to try BLW but DD has no teeth!

This may be a stupid question () but i am quite keen to try BLW but DD (6 months this week) has no teeth so does that mean i cant give her toast etc to munch on? At the moment she is having two meals a day - one babyrice for breakfast and a veg puree for late lunch.

We have been weaning for 2 weeks and she's loving anything i give her.

TIA.

she will gum anything you give her!

LittleMyDancing · 02/06/2008 22:38

she could probably gum things like very soft steamed carrot sticks, steamed broccoli etc? Their little gums are quite hard at this stage, and I think DS only had two teeth when we started, so he couldn't have been grinding stuff up with anything except his gums.

HTH

Nope - go ahead. Gums work brilliantly

NoBiggy · 02/06/2008 22:40

As Tommy says, doesn't make a huge amount of difference. My DD was very keen on crusty rolls and didn't get teeth until well after 6 months.

Corn on the cob was about the only thing she couldn't make much impression on.

Brilliant, thanx! I might try her on philly on toast tomorrow then. Really wish i had a highchair tho. Would make life ALOT easier lol

I started ds BLW at 6 months, he did great. He started getting teeth when he was 12 months!!!!

NoBiggy · 02/06/2008 22:42

What are you using? I ordered a Jane highchair after much thought. But it's arrival was so delayed I bought a booster seat with tray in the meantime. Got on so well with that I never used the Jane one (it splits into a low table and chair and has often been used like that).

DD was chowing down on inappropriate foods way before her teeth were up to the job. Gums are actually harder than teeth for the first year or so anyway - the jawbone is a lot harder than establishing enamel.

NoBiggy - i'm just using her little Fisher Price play chair to feed her in. We're pretty skint at the mo and cant afford a highchair and as DD doesn't quite sit unaided yet i dont know what else we could use really!

DA - i've saved Aitch's blog thing to my favourites so i'll have a good trawl through there later. I am deffo going to give her something to munch on tomoz tho!

Blimey, that IS cheap!! I think we could possibly stretch to £15! thanx for the link, will look into it. I will also try sitting up with DD for finger foods.

I'm getting really excited about this now!

I ditched my expensive highchair in favour of the IKEA one because DD kept escaping all others! You can even take the legs off and stick it in the dishwasher if it gets very mucky.

jamila169 · 02/06/2008 23:25

Ahh the wonderful Antilop! our is sitting on the garden for some strange reason. It's 9 years old and has travelled the length and breadth of the country in our caravan wardrobe! DD2 is raring to go at food and pinched some broccoli off my dinner yesterday, it's made it's presence felt today though -she's just going to have to wait the extra month, it'll give me time to get the highchair jetwashed

RGPargy · 02/06/2008 23:30

how annoying!! They have the chair for delivery but not the tray?? Why would they do that? lol

An excuse to go to IKEA if ever i saw one.

No need for teeth just a huge plastic sheet IME.

IKEA highchair? Best £15 I ever spent.

I tried DD on some toast and Philly this morning!

She didn't know quite what to do with it at first but then she realised it was food and seemed to be quite happy with it. I used WW danish brown bread, cut up into fours. She ate about a quarter of a square lol. Not very much but it's a start! However she was very hungry so got the hump pretty quickly as she wantd her food there and then so i ended up giving her some babyrice as i normally do in the mornings.

I think i will try her again when she isn't quite so hungry (breakfast times is when she's always ravenous) so that she'll have a bit more patience with it all.

I'm really pleased that she gummed a bit tho.

I found dd2 liked things like porridge, flavoured rices, mashed banana.

I also found things like babyrice cakes both plain and apple and cinnamon, they melt when they eat them.

claireybee · 03/06/2008 12:50

DD didn't have teeth til she was one and we did blw-she didn't eat a great deal before then but that was more lack of interest than lack of ability
