Is this ok - unplanned weaning

DS is 6 1/2 months and my second child. With my first I was very structured with a different veg puree every day for 2 weeks, then gradually introducing more variety. But with DS the time just seems to be getting away from me, so instead of veg purees I'll just giving him whatever we're having, just chopped up or mashed a bit if appropriate - DD eats the same as us so it's not salted or too spicy. Is this OK? Will I have messed him up by not doing strict 'veg first' for two weeks?

That's exactly what we did - kids had bits off our dinner.
I think as weaning has moved to starting later, the very gentle introduction to food groups has become less important.
Baby will soon let you know if they are unhappy with things!

Absolutely fine. Hope he enjoys it

PersephoneParlormaid · 10/09/2025 07:03

It’s fine, just watch for salt

Unicornsandprincesses · 10/09/2025 07:04

That’s how we did it with. DS now 18 months

I didn’t know you were supposed to do vegetables only for two weeks? Not something I did or people in my NCT group! All the children seem fine!

Just had a look on the NHS website and I can’t this advice there either? I think most people just give them normal food, most people don’t have the time to cook separately.

In a funny five minutes of trying to be a wonder mum I did make some cheesy vegetable croquettes etc., but after they threw them on the floor for the 10th time I gave up and just gave them what we had!!

DS(now 17) refused purees, and just did mashed or finger foods from 6 months and a day. With DD i just gave her finger foods from the off.

Absolutely fine, no need for purées/mashed veg IMO. Our baby is a really good eater I believe partly because we just give her (unsalted properly prepared) bits and pieces and let her go at her own pace vs trying to shovel puree in.

I’ve seen a lot of parents cause themselves a lot of stress with making elaborate purees and stressing about their child’s intake, makes mealtimes stressful and two friends have 9 month olds who are struggling to eat more solid food now. The low stress, baby led option is far superior IMO.

The advantage of introducing single foods is so you can be more confident about allergens. So long as you are conscious of what you are introducing and when I'd have thought you're OK.
Be careful of textures to avoid choking risks.

Not just ok but entirely recommended as a method.

Thanks all - I feel better now. I think it feels a bit like I was taking the lazy option but he seems to be enjoying the variety and can join in at meal times so I'll relax a bit.

@PersephoneParlormaiddefinitely thinking about salt - tbh I got out of the habit of adding salt when weaning DD so we tend to add our own after cooking now.

@CompletI've just looked too, and you're right - I honestly thought it was on there. When I was weaning DD everyone I talked to was following the Annabell Karmel approach of veg first so that's what we did too.

The veg thing is a very old way of weaning and was used when babies were weaned way before 6 months and fruit and veg was all they could eat.

If you’re offering healthy family food from day one then you’re doing well Smile
