DS is 6,5mhts and been weaning for a while (on and off - him not me!). He's been haivng a few longish very solid poos - he looks very uncomfortable when he 's doing one. Just wondered what I can give him. Been tyring to get water down him at meal times but he will only have a couple of sips before refusing completely. He's not keen on fruit pureees either... did someone mention orange juice as a cure?

Orange juice can help
Will he have prunes or prune juice

Orange juice can help, or prunes - but stand back, the result can be quite dramatic! You can get prune juice, or mix pureed prune into yoghurt.

thanks - do I give the either juice watered down? How much shall I try and get him to take, as i say, it's hard getting him to take water as it is - he's def a breast man!

Or you can just stick prune juice in with something he likes, eg mashed banana. I stewed a couple of prunes, shoved them through a sieve and sneaked them into a mashed banana (only thing DS will eat with enthusiasm but unfortunately also constipating). Viola - no more poo shrieks . If I'd got prune juice - or orange - I'd have tried smuggling in about a teaspoon or so I guess?

Hi Smiling. New to this so few abbreviations I'm afraid! My DD (hope that means daughter!) is 6.5 months and been on solids and boob for a month now. She got very badly constipated about a week ago. The doc gave us Lactilose but I made the Mixed Dried Fruit Compote from Annabel Karmel's book and that did the trick. It's dried prunes and dried apricots mixed with apple and pear so it ends up a generally sweet and non acidic mush. It did the trick. DD also does some monster poos at times and strains like you wouldn't believe but as long as their bums look unharmed after a poo, I've been told not to worry (by father in law who is retired GP who specialised in bums!) .

DD had this recently. I looked in my bible of the moment "The Baby Book" by Dr Sears and to paraphrase; when increasing the intake of fibre in a baby's diet, the increased fibre in the poo draws more water into the, ahem, stool. However, he says it is very important to increase the intake of fluids at the same time as increasing fibre otherwise the stools can actually become drier.

In DDs case a bit of extra water at mealtimes did the trick, but that wasn't too difficult as she loves her cup, so sorry if that is not much help in your case!
