What purees for 5 month old?

Hello. We have been weaning for about a month and so far have done banana, baby rice, carrot, butternut squash and colliflower.

What else can I give? I am about to do my online shop so would love some ideas! I have heard that green veges are not likely to go down so well?

The only fruit DD has tried is banana, what other fruits can I offer? And do they all need cooking?

Also, if I do sweet potato, can this be blended or is it meant to be done in a mouli like potato?

Didn't wean until 6 months as recommended and can't remember back to Ds's weaning days. Sorry.

Izzywhizzy · 30/05/2008 14:28

People are going to tell you off for weaning so early, but in answer to your question, stwed plums and pears, carrot and parsnip.

chloemegjess · 30/05/2008 14:33

Please dont start off the whole early weaning arguements. I have done my research, and made my own decision about my baby. Just wanted to know about purees.

Green veg is fine, especially if you mix with something sweeter - spinach and sweet pots for example.

When I did brocolli I mixed it with a bit of baby rice and milk to soften the taste slightly. Now he eats whole florets

Annabel Karmel is good for imaginitive combinations.

Naetha · 30/05/2008 14:36

My DS is 5 months and absolutely loves banana by itself, and mixed with prunes (tinned - don't forget to take the stones out!).

Apple and pears also go down a treat (steamed), as does melon (serve cold on a hot day!). He also loved apple and strawberry, but might be an idea to steam the strawberries first to take some of the tartness out.

Veg wise he loves carrot, parsnip and avocado.

Always try the purees first that they aren't too tart (apple and blueberry was lovely, but too tart at first, and had to be mixed with a LOT more apple).

Check out fruits and veg on special offer - there's often offers on fruits that you wouldn't necessarily get, but are great for purees (e.g. apricots, plums, strawberries, blueberries).

chloemegjess · 30/05/2008 14:45

Can you freeze all these Naetha? I thought strawberries were dogdy because of allergies? Might have got that wrong.

Thanks for the help

5 months is too young for strawberries iirc

TwoFirTreesToday · 30/05/2008 16:33

ripe banana and avacado make a nice change too

pinata · 31/05/2008 16:47

my 6m DD's favourite concotions are:

sweetcorn and coriander

butternut squash, spinach and apricot

leek, potato and apple

red cabbage and apple

parsnip and brocolli

i'm doing this week's batch tomorrow and am planning to add butternut squash and apple

when i do veg, i try and make sure there's something a bit sweet tasing in there, like apple, or parsnip, rather than just plain veg

puree them with the cooking water in there, too

all of these are fully freezable and all my own ideas, so i am quite proud that DD actually likes them!

Hi ive just started weaning my ds at 5 months and am using the Gina ford book, I think its fab coz she gives u what foods u can introduce when, how to cook and puree the foods, and it goes right through to 12 months, with loads of great recipes and feeding plan ideas.

I know alot of people dont like the gina ford way of doing things but for someone like me who doesnt have a clue when it comes to weaning, its given me all i will ever need to know and its work through things slowly so u know if something reacts to your ds/dd!

seeker · 01/06/2008 22:53

None at all - your dd should be on milk only until 6 months. Your post suggests that you have been giving her solids since she was 4 months old. I just do not understand why people do this.

VictorianSqualor · 01/06/2008 22:56

I agree seeker.

emma1977 · 01/06/2008 23:03

Current favourite is baby porridge with apple and banana.

Also loves sweet potato, parsnip, carrot, courgette (disguised with stuff), cauliflower, butternut squash, pear and peach.

Trying blueberries, peas, green beans and broccoli next week.

I have been tending to mix the puree with baby rice and milk. Should I be giving the purees alone now? Been weaning for 2 weeks.

sushistar · 01/06/2008 23:08

Wow, early weaning and Gina Ford weaning in one thread!

When your baby reaches 6 months, try finger foods. Great fun.

emma1977 · 01/06/2008 23:11

What are good finger foods to begin with?

Does much actually get eaten or just smeared in the hair?

VictorianSqualor · 01/06/2008 23:13

emma, take a look at aitchs blog she has lots of recipes and things for finger foods etc on there.

emma1977 · 01/06/2008 23:15

That's fab.

Thanks VS.

Sixer · 01/06/2008 23:21

who is gina ford? how many children has she had that she weaned? Just try different foods. How many months is your DD chloemegjess? That will give us an idea to help you.

Twinklemegan · 01/06/2008 23:28

I'd reiterate that the advice is to wait until 6 months. But anyway, I used the Gina Ford weaning book and I found it to be excellent. I wasn't that confident and I tried lots of things I probably wouldn't have done otherwise. I also liked the one cube of this, two cubes of that approach - I think it's the control freak in me that identifies with GF .

Annabel Karmel's book is useful, but a bit weird and faffy in places.

In answer to your other questions, you can do sweet potato with a blender - no mouli required. Stewed apple/stewed pear are great for babies. I would definitely second the bananacado combination (which is copyright to the July 2006 postnatal thread I might add ). Avocado and apple is another good one.

Sixer · 02/06/2008 00:06

gina who.? has she had lots of children then? What an expert, How many children has she raised from birth? I must buy her book. Nothing like first hand experience to get new mums through. Although saying that i do like a mix of ideas, which i think is why I prefer the MN jury !!

Twinklemegan · 02/06/2008 00:15

It might surprise you Sixer, but only if you're the type of person that doesn't mind a regimented kind of approach (which I'm guessing you're not!). I'm not a fan of the CTB book by the way.

I simply like the way she sets out a plan for introducing a wide range of flavours gradually and in a way where you can identify any reactions. It's also dead easy to follow. I dare say I wouldn't use it so much with a second child, but with my first I found it very helpful. Don't knock it til you've tried it!

seeker · 02/06/2008 06:13

How can you be aware of things like allergies, and introducing different foods gradually - but still wean at 4 months?
I wish there was a [beats head against a brick wall] emoticon!

TwoFirTreesToday · 02/06/2008 11:50

lol Twinklemegan, I'n sure I was doing Banana Avacado in 2005, but my mind had a blank on whether I was on Mumsnet! When did Mumsnet start? I need an emoticon for no memory!

chloemegjess · 02/06/2008 21:03

thanks to the people who helped answer my question!
