Starting with solids and a bit confused

My baby is 6 months and a week and we have been starting solids for about 2 weeks. I am doing some pures and soft vegetable bits for her to grab. She seems very very interested in food, always snatching from us whenever we eat anything while holding her. But when I try to feed her she gets absolutely desperate. No idea why. She starts very excited and grabs the spoon but very quickly she is screaming her head off. I rarely manage to get more than one tiny baby spoon in. And we then need 15min to calm down. She rarely gets upset for other things, usually in a good mood so im a bit confused if Im doing anything wrong or it is a sign of anything?

We have been exclusively breastfed up until now and no problems with weight, no sign of any allergies.

Has this happened to anyone and how did you deal with it?

Offer her food earlier on as she's obviously hungry. Also let her pick her own food off her high chair tray as well as spoonfeeding (can have some very soft cooked food on tray for her to finger feed alongside the puree). Have 2 spoons you can let her feed herself with one while you load the other and alternate.
She just sounds frustrated with how slow its going so id just add more fun into it and allow her more control.
Strip her down to her nappy (thank god its summer!) And just let her get messy x

Let her feed herself with her fingers.

My second screamed the house down of we tried to feed them.

I agree with plonking some food on her high chair tray and letting her play with them whilst you eat your own food. She should be having solids roughly an hour after a milk feed so she should be too hungry.

Breakfast is usually a good one to try first. How about giving her omelette cut into strips? Cheese on toast cut into fingers or a banana?

How have you got on today @Lombriz?

Lombriz · 09/08/2025 19:46

@Wavescrashingonthebeach I think i have tried all of those, giving her more freedom definitely helps but we still do end up in tears towards the end.

@BunnyRuddington I am sticking to breakfast, you are right she is in better mood. And im leaving her to make a mess. She still got a bit upset with the spoon fairly quickly. Then I changed tactic and gave her a whole apricot, she loved it. She could hold on to it and keep eating.
