My 6 and half month old son has just gotten to where he has 7oz milk first feed, then cereal and fruit second, solid lunch either fruit or veg sometimes meat too, 5oz milk, solid t meat and 2 veg plus dessert, 5oz milk.

Is this ok? Am tired of ppl esp those without any kids of their own making me feel like shit mum family say too little milk now [huh]

I homecook all food and try give him a balanced diet with lots of different colours in a day.

Confused .....

I can't help but just wanted to let you know you're not alone with this prob. My ds doesn't seem too bothered about milk, some people tell me to give more others say not to worry. At 7-9 months he was only having 1 bottle a day and even my hv said that ok. My baby book says they sould have about 20 oz so I just added anither bottle mdafternoon. Remember he has milk in cereal too so you gotta count that. Talk to hv but if you finding it hard fitting in more milk, give yogurts, grated cheese etc to build it up a bit.
The fact that you worried about it and are on a site like this shows you not a shit mum. Don't let them get to you!

EdieMcredie · 28/05/2008 08:31

You are obviously a good mother to be worrying about it so much!

At this age, 20oz is about correct, Kellymom has some good advice, ill try and do link.

IIRC cows milk doesn't count, I may be wrong, can someone clarify?

20 fl ozs is about right at that age. There are guidelines on the back of the tin. For cereals etc, cow's milk is fine at that age, provided it is only used to mix food and in cereal, but not as a main drink.

If you are a single parent do you not get free formula? I remember I did with DS, but iirc it was only one tin per week. Every little helps though.

My DD is coming up to a year old and she still has about 20fl ozs a day, but am in the process of trying to reduce that and change to cows milk as well.

And I second the thought that if you are on here posting and aer worried about it, then you are obviously not a shit mum

Just thought I'd update you on what happened to me today. I took ds to clinic to get weighed (I go once a month) and met a friend ther whose dd is just 6 months. HV told me to cut 2nd bottle that I recently re-introduced as he putting on too much weight (9months weighs 27lbs). Not sure if I'm gonna yet. Anyway, my point, my friend's dd has gone off milk feeds. She eats all her solids and won't have milk that been offered to her. The only successful bottle feed is at bedtime. My friend concerned so talked to HV who said, if she don't want it don't bother offering it (not exact words but get drift). This at 6 months. Everyone gonna have different views and I personally think milk quite important, but speak to a professional as they see far more things like this then any of us and then you have other mums input plus that of someone "trained" and can make mind up then. Follow instincts, if you think you doing it right then it probably is right for your individual baby

lackaDAISYcal · 29/05/2008 14:41

littleboyblue, I'd be very concerned if a HV was telling me to cut my baby's milk to only one bottle a day at the age of 6 months, and your friend should be concerned as well. they cannot physically take in enough solid food at that age to provide the same calories or vitamins that they can get from milk. You don't say how old your DS is now, but in your first post you mentioned 7-9months, so he is obviously older than that now. I'm not entirely convinced you have had the best advice really and your HV should know better.

Milk should be the main source of nutrition for infants up to a year of age, as per WHO and UK guidelines.

lonelysinglemummy, your DS is taking around 17fl ozs of milk, so not far off the 20fl oz recommended at this age. I don't think you are doing too badly there.

littleboyblue · 29/05/2008 19:07

Hi lackaDAISYcal. DS will be 10months next week. I am concerned, but he does eat an awful lot! My friend seemed happy with the advice she was given, but that her choice, I did tell her I thought milk far to important to only have 1 bottle at 6 months, but can't tell her what to do.
Do think hv is a bit mad but if he putting on too much weight, he putting on too much weight. I'm gonna reduce the ammount of milk in that 2nd bottle, up yogurts and custards etc and give cheese etc and foods that contain calcium, protein etc. We'll see how it goes. He doesn't want the afternoon bottle, he doesn't tell me he hungry, he'll drink it if it there but isn't bothered if it not

lackaDAISYcal · 29/05/2008 20:46

thanks lbb....it's so difficult if they don't follow the normal patterns isn't it? your DS sounds like a healthy boy . Mine was the same, and DD is a petite wee thing in comparison.

LonelySingleMummy · 31/05/2008 12:45

Well I'm going to stop listening to ppl from now on. Gave in and upped his bottles and now he is hardly eating any solids, refuses!
Ladies, we mums know best, I have decided and I am magnanimous in that

Good for you.
I ended up just cutting out the whole afternoon bottle and he doesn't seem to have noticed.
