How much food?

I need a little advice.
My 9month old eats quite alot and I'm not sure what I'm happy with. Here's what he has:
6am 1.5 weetabix + yogurt with some juice
Nap at 9 till about 11
12 noon jar of food(has gone off home cooked) + custard/peice of fruit
2:30/3pm 6oz milk and nap
5/5:30pm another jar with some fruit
7pm 7oz bottle to go to bed.

Sorry to go on but I feel it's too much food in the afternoon, but if he didn't want it he wouldn't eat it right?
I've only just re-introduced afternoon bottle as wasn't really happy with just 1 bottle. What do you think? Any advice at all would be very helpful. Thanx in advance. X

My 7 month old twin charges have similar.

7am 6oz bottle.
8am 3 cubes fruit with porridge or 1/2 weetabix each.
9-10 nap
11:30 cube carb (pot/squaash/pasta/rice) cube protein, and 2 cubes veg (sometimes a cube of cheese sauce/gravy/mush sauce/curry sauce also) then 2 cubes fruit with spoonful of natural yog
12:30-2:30 nap
2:30 5oz bottle and a snack (fruit or rice cake)
4pm 4 cubes veg and 2 cubes fruit
5-5:30 nap
6:30 9oz bottle and bed

They are thriving! Went to have them weighed and they are both on the same percentile line they have always bee on. Younger on 91st and older on 75th, have been on these since birth, so unless he has gained alot of weight then I wouldn't worry. I am guessing he is moving about now, and so burning off any excess energy. The health visitor said that a baby will not eat anymore than they need, if they eat quickly and too much, they will bring it back up.

I think that what he is on is fine and not to worry, there is not really anything that is unhealthy so don't worry about him!

I have been a nanny for 22 years and trust me, some kids just need more than others to survive!

Just enjoy him, stop worrying. Only worry when he is old enough to run around and he either doesn't or gets out of breath if he does.

Thanx. I know you're right. My ds is on 98th centile and has been since birth. I'm getting him weighed in week so will have better idea then. It was quite hard at start coz he had bad reflux so was never sure if sick was coz of too much food or just the reflux, that gone now and he not bringing anything up so must be fine.
It only been this past week that I added the afternoon bottle. My HV said that just the 1 would be fine but I think it quite important for bones and teeth etc. He's not crawling or anything yet so God knows how much food he'll want when he needs the extra energy!

So he is just having two bottles? They are supposed to have about a pint of milk a day until they are a year old. Sounds like he's doing great with the food but I don't think he's having enough milk, tbh.

littleboyblue · 27/05/2008 23:22

that's what I was concerned about but I don't really wanna cut down on his solids. I was told he needs between 18 and 20 oz. So he has 7 at bedtime, 6 midafternoon and 5 mixed into breakfast cereal. He also has yogurts and custards and cheese etc so I suppose that adds to it a bit. Gonna speak to hv again tomoz see what she says but in my experience they not very helpful. She did tell me he'd be ok on just 7oz and that some babies aren't bothered about milk and if that the case that was ok, but it's not though is it!

If he's having that much milk then it should be fine. How do you get so much milk into his cereal though?! I try to get him some extra in cereal but we can only get in an ounce or so.

littleboyblue · 28/05/2008 22:11

Tinkjon, when ds has weetabix he has 1.5 and I mix formula in not cows milk. He is still on thicker prescribed formula that was treating reflux. He'll move onto follow on when this tin is empty.
Spoke to HV again today and she stands by her view that 1 bottle a day is perfectly fine. Like I said I added another bottle and he's put on too much weight so they've advised that I cut it out. She said by the time her a year he should only have 1 bottle anyway. Not sure if I will cut it out yet, but it is just as cruel to overfeed so might. Oh, I don't know!!! Feeding is my only concern.

I disagree with HV that they should only be on 1 bottle after a year I think it's that one bottle is ok, not that it must only be one, if that makes sense. Wow, I'm impressed that he eats 1.5 Weetabix!! My DS would barely have 1.5 spoonsful Good idea though, I will try him on that - I've been trying to think of cereals where you can add a lot of milk to t hem and porridge is the only thing I'd thought of. Will get some Weetabix to try. What's the betting he won't eat that either? Isn't it funny how some kids eat nothing and some eat loads?!

littleboyblue · 29/05/2008 09:23

We can only try. I know what you mean about the bottles. Her exact words were "After about a year, you only really want him to be having 1 bottle, so instead of worrying day to day about this, think of it as you have 2 and a bit months to slowly wean him off of that bottle his haveing mid afternoon."
He's always been on 91st centile and in 4 weeks has jumped to 98th so she said all it was doing was making him put too much weight on, but that bottle is the only way I can get him to nap. DP wants me to cut it out as well and give him yogurt or something
